Lamu is warm all year, but the dry months give you the calm seas and clear skies that make a honeymoon feel effortless. The wet months are quieter and cheaper, with rain that comes and goes.
Lamu's Dry Season
Period: July to October, December to February
What to Expect: July to October is the cooler dry stretch, and the kaskazi trade winds bring good sailing and kitesurfing conditions at Shela Beach. December to February is hotter and more humid, with clear water and long beach days. December and January are the busiest weeks of the year, so book early if you want Shela over the festive season.
Lamu's Wet Season
Period: April to June, with May the wettest month
What to Expect: Rain arrives in bursts rather than all day, the island empties out, and rates soften. If the two of you want Lamu almost to yourselves and do not mind a wet afternoon, this is your window. Some smaller places close for part of the long rains, so confirm before you commit.
How Do You Get to Lamu?
You fly. Daily flights run from Nairobi and the coast to Manda Airport on Manda Island, and a short boat ride takes you across the channel to Lamu Town or Shela. Driving is not recommended: the UK Foreign Office advises travelling to the islands only by air, because of security concerns in mainland Lamu County near the Somalia border. Lamu Island itself is calm and well used to visitors. Fly in, and the island does the rest.

How Do You Get Around Lamu?
Lamu Old Town has no cars. You get around on foot, by boat, and occasionally behind a donkey. It sounds like an inconvenience and turns out to be the best thing about the place: nothing moves faster than a walking pace, which is exactly the speed a holiday for two should run at.
Details: Walking is how you see Old Town and Shela. The lanes are narrow, sandy and made for wandering, and Shela to Lamu Town along the water takes around 40 minutes.
Why Use: Free, and the only way to find the carved doors, the market and the small cafés you will remember.
Tip: Wear sandals or go barefoot. Cover shoulders and knees away from the beach, out of respect for a conservative Muslim community.

Around three thousand donkeys do the heavy lifting on Lamu, carrying cargo through lanes far too narrow for anything else. They are working animals, not a ride, and the Lamu Donkey Sanctuary is worth a visit.
Why Use: Boda bodas reach the parts of the island beyond the main settlements, mostly at low tide, and are the only motorised option outside Old Town.

Lamu Old Town has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, and it is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. Wander the coral-stone lanes with a local guide, stop at Lamu Fort and the Lamu Museum, and look up at the carved doors. Nothing here is staged for visitors. Yes, Lamu Island is safe for couples, and incidents involving visitors in Lamu Town and Shela are rare. The security concerns you may have read about relate to mainland Lamu County near the Somalia border, not the island. The UK Foreign Office advises reaching the islands by air rather than by road, which is exactly how we bring you in.
You fly from Nairobi to Manda Airport in around 1.5 hours, then take a short boat across the channel to Lamu Town or Shela. Jambojet, Safarilink and Skyward Express serve Manda Airport, with departures from Wilson, JKIA, Mombasa and Malindi depending on the day. We book the flight and meet you at the airstrip with your boat.
The best months for a Lamu honeymoon are July to October and December to February, when the island is dry and the sea is calm. July to October is cooler with good sailing winds. December to February is hotter and busier, so book early. May is the wettest month and the quietest, which suits couples who want the beach to themselves.
Three to four days covers Lamu properly: Old Town, Shela Beach, a dhow sail and a day trip to Manda Island and the Takwa Ruins. Five to seven days is better if the point of the trip is to slow down, which for most couples it is. The island rewards staying longer than you planned.
No, you do not need a car in Lamu, because Lamu Old Town has no motorised vehicles at all. You walk, you take boats, and donkeys carry everything else. It is one of the few places in Kenya where the two of you can spend a week without ever sitting in traffic.
Swimwear is fine on Shela Beach, but cover your shoulders and knees in Lamu Town and Shela village. Lamu is a conservative Muslim community and modest dress is simply good manners. Loose cotton, a kikoi and sandals will carry you through the entire trip.
