Conservancy country, where you can walk, ride and drive after dark. Two of the last northern white rhinos on Earth live here, and the mountain fills the whole eastern sky at breakfast.
Three things get confused here, so let us separate them. Laikipia is a county, and as a place to travel it means conservancies rather than a national park you drive into. Nanyuki is the town at its eastern edge, and the practical base: the airstrip, the beds, the restaurants and the road up the mountain. Mount Kenya is the mountain itself, and while Nanyuki is the gateway to its western routes, the national park sits in neighbouring counties.
That distinction matters because it changes how everything is priced. Most of Laikipia is private and community conservancy land, much of it still working ranch grazed by cattle alongside the wildlife. Some conservancies fold access into an all-inclusive nightly rate. Others, Ol Pejeta above all, run like a gated reserve with a published day rate. There is no single Laikipia park fee, which is why we quote per property rather than posting a number.
What you get in exchange is the thing national parks cannot offer. On conservancy land you can walk with a guide, ride, cycle and drive after dark. For two people, that is a completely different holiday from six hours a day in a vehicle, and it is the reason we send couples here.

On the Conservancies
Camps and lodges run full board, and on the exclusive-use properties drinks and activities are usually in the rate too. You will not be going out for dinner. Tell us about allergies or a celebration when you book, because these kitchens are small and they plan around you.
Nanyuki Town (around KES 1,200-2,500)
Nanyuki eats far better than a town this size has any right to. Decades of expatriate residency, a strong farming hinterland and a steady stream of climbers have left it with proper coffee, real pizza and trout from the Burguret River. This is where you have lunch on the way in and dinner on the way out.
A Note on Timing
Two of the best places in Nanyuki close on Mondays, and the most famous one shuts in the late afternoon and does not do dinner at all. Check the day and the hour before you build an evening around any of them.
Location: Off the Kiganjo-Nanyuki road, by the Burguret River
Menu: Trout, from the ponds below you. Chowder, coriander trout, fresh juices.
Why Visit: The dining room is built into a fig tree, with colobus monkeys and tree hyraxes moving through the branches beside you. Open 10:00 AM to about 4:45 PM only, so it is a lunch, not a dinner. Book at weekends.

Period: Late June to October, and January to February
What to Expect: The best game viewing and the only sensible windows for a Mount Kenya summit trek. Clear mornings, firm tracks and the mountain visible at dawn before the cloud builds, which it usually does by mid morning. Nights are genuinely cold, into single figures at altitude. July to October and the December holidays are busy on the conservancies that take day visitors, so book early.
Period: March to May for the long rains, October to December for the short rains
What to Expect: The plains turn green, the birding is superb and the conservancies empty out. Game viewing stays good here in a way it does not in some parks, because the wildlife is resident rather than migratory. Tracks soften and a 4×4 matters more. Mount Kenya above the treeline becomes wet, cold and often snow-covered, so save the summit for a dry window and do a foothill hike instead.
Nanyuki is roughly 195 km from Nairobi on the A2 through Thika and Karatina, which is three to four hours in normal conditions and one of the better drives in the country. You cross the equator on the way in, just north of town. There are also daily flights from Wilson and a weekend train that most people do not know exists, which is a shame, because it is the most romantic way to arrive. We handle transfers from all three.
Safarilink and AirKenya fly Wilson to Nanyuki (NYK) in about 40 minutes. Small aircraft, tight baggage limits.
The Nanyuki Safari Train runs out on Friday and back on Sunday, through Sagana, Karatina and Naro Moru. Confirm the schedule before booking around it.
About 195 km on the A2 via Thika, Karatina and Naro Moru. Three to four hours, tarmac the whole way.
Ol Pejeta’s gates are about 30 to 40 minutes away. Sirimon Gate on Mount Kenya is one to two hours.

Laikipia splits into three kinds of bed and they cost wildly different amounts. Exclusive-use conservancy houses and camps, where a handful of guests have tens of thousands of acres and everything is in the rate. Camps and cottages inside Ol Pejeta, which give you the gate on your doorstep at a more reachable price. And Nanyuki town, which is the practical base for a mountain trek or a short trip.
Whichever you choose, ask for a room facing east. Mount Kenya is clearest at dawn and usually gone behind cloud by ten, so the view you paid for is a view you have to be awake for.
Details: Borana, Loisaba, Segera, Ol Jogi, Ol Lentille and Mugie all run small camps, lodges and houses on private conservancy land. Walking, riding, night drives and in some cases star beds are standard rather than extras, and conservancy fees are folded into the nightly rate.

Laikipia is not a park with a circuit and a gate time. It is a patchwork of private properties, each with its own rules, and a mountain next door with an entirely different set. Here is how the pieces fit together.
Details: Because this is private and community land rather than a national park, guided walking, horse riding, camel treks, cycling and night drives are all possible depending on the property.
Why it matters: These are the things KWS parks do not permit, and they are the reason to choose Laikipia. A walk at dawn or a drive after dark will be the part of the trip you talk about afterwards.
Tip: Check what is included before you book. On exclusive-use properties most of it is in the rate. At Ol Pejeta the premium activities are charged separately and sell out, so book them with the trip.
Details: Entry and exit are through the Rongai and Serat gates only, between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. The conservancy is entirely cashless and tickets are booked online in advance. Entry is single-use for day visitors and valid 24 hours if you are staying inside.
Why it matters: Turning up at the gate to pay is not an option, and walk-ins pay full rates.
Tip: The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Baraka the blind black rhino are included with entry. The northern white rhino experience is not, and needs booking days ahead.
Details: Sirimon is the main route from the Nanyuki side and the one we use most, typically four to six days to Point Lenana at 4,985 metres. Burguret is the remote alternative and considerably harder. Neither needs technical climbing skills, but both need fitness and proper acclimatisation.
Why it matters: KWS charges Mount Kenya per 24-hour period, so a four-day trek is four times the daily fee. Guides and porters are arranged through us.
Tip: Do not compress the itinerary to save a day. Altitude sickness on Lenana is common and it is almost always about ascending too fast.

Why Consider: The properties are far apart on rough ranch roads, and self-driving between conservancies eats a day you would rather spend somewhere else.
Tip: Tell your guide if you are marking an anniversary. The equator crossing north of Nanyuki makes a better photograph than people expect, and it costs nothing to stop.
Cold: Nanyuki sits near 1,950 metres. Nights are cold all year and the mountain is colder. Bring a proper fleece, not a cardigan.
The equator: The roadside demonstration of water swirling in opposite directions either side of the line is a trick, not physics. Enjoy it, tip the man, do not believe it.
Working land: Much of Laikipia is still ranched and grazed. Expect cattle alongside the wildlife. That is the model, not an intrusion on it.
There are two northern white rhinos left anywhere in the world. Both are female, both live in a guarded enclosure at Ol Pejeta, and when they are gone the subspecies is gone with them. You can stand with them for forty-five minutes, with one of the keepers who has spent years alongside them, and the money goes into the research trying to change the ending. Ol Pejeta also runs the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, both of which are included with your entry. It is not a light morning. Most couples tell us afterwards it was the part of Kenya they were least prepared for.
No, Laikipia is a county made up of private and community conservancies rather than a national park. That is why there is no single gate and no single park fee. Each conservancy sets its own terms: some charge a published day rate, others include access in an all-inclusive nightly rate and take no day visitors at all. It also means walking, riding and night drives are possible here in a way they are not in a KWS park.
Adult day entry is KES 2,000 for East African citizens, KES 3,500 for East African residents and USD 110 for non-residents, with children aged 3 to 11 at half rate and under-3s free. Entry is single-use for day visitors and valid 24 hours if you are staying inside the conservancy. Gates are cashless and tickets must be booked online in advance, so walk-ups are not an option. We confirm the current rate when we quote you.
Yes, Ol Pejeta runs a booked 45-minute experience with Najin and Fatu in their enclosure, from around USD 70 per adult on top of your entry fee. Slots run several times a day and must be booked in advance, and they can be cancelled if conditions are not right for the animals. It is separate from the standard game drive and it is the single most requested thing on this page, so tell us early.
Choose Laikipia if you want space, quiet and the freedom to get out of the vehicle, and the Mara if the migration and sheer density of game are the point. The Mara is unmatched between July and October and busy to match. Laikipia is resident rather than migratory, so it holds up all year, and you will share a sighting with nobody. For a couple rather than a photographic expedition, Laikipia usually wins. Many of our clients do both.
