Best Time to Visit Nairobi
Nairobi welcomes you any time, but picking the right season makes all the difference. Dry months offer clear views and easy wildlife spotting, while wet months bring lush scenery and extra birds, though rain can complicate plans.

How to Get to Nairobi
Nairobi is easily accessible by plane, train, car, or bus. The airport is 10 miles away, and taxis are the best option for transfers. The Madaraka Express (SGR) runs between Nairobi Terminus and Mombasa. The city is connected by highways, but roads may not always be paved or well-maintained. Private bus companies like Coast Bus Nairobi and Easy Coach LTD offer intercity service.
The Madaraka Express (SGR) leaves from Nairobi Terminus on the Mombasa Road side of the city, so allow time for the transfer into town.
Airlines Serving Nairobi
Most international airlines land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), which is also Kenya’s main hub for flights to the coast. Wilson Airport, on the southern side of the city, handles small aircraft and many safari flights.

Getting Around
Nairobi’s busy streets call for smart ways to move from place to place. Whether you’re zipping to the CBD, heading to Nairobi National Park, or exploring Karen, here’s how to get around easily, pick what fits your style, budget, and plans.
Tap your phone to book a ride with Uber or Bolt, big players in Nairobi since 2015 and 2016. Options range from budget-friendly rides (Bolt Lite, UberX) to roomier ones (Bolt XL, UberSELECT).
- Why Use: Fast, cashless (card or mobile money), and safer with driver tracking. Fares start at about KES 150 to 200, with rates per kilometre around KES 50 to 60. Bolt is often cheaper; Uber has wider reach.
- Good For: Solo travellers, quick trips, or late night rides. Use airport WiFi to book from JKIA if you are just landing.
- Tip: Share your ride details with someone for extra peace of mind.
Yellow-striped cabs parked at hotspots like the CBD, Yaya Centre, or JKIA. No app needed—just hop in or call companies like Kenatco.
- Why Use: Private and comfy, with fares around KES 500 in the city center or KES 1200 to suburbs like Karen. Negotiate upfront—meters are rare.
- Good For: Tourists who prefer a classic ride or need a lift when apps are down.
- Tip: Carry small bills; drivers might not have change. Stick to licensed cabs for safety.
Rent a car with a driver from firms like Bamm Tours & Safaris or Jimcab Services. Options include sedans, SUVs, or vans for groups.
- Why Use: Stress-free—your driver knows Nairobi’s roads and traffic quirks. Costs vary (KES 5,000-10,000/day), but it’s cheaper than multiple taxi trips.
- Good For: Day-long outings, families, or business travelers who want a local pro behind the wheel.
- Tip: Book through your hotel or a trusted company for reliability.
Rent a car to drive yourself from companies like Bamm Tours & Safaris. Choose compacts (KES 3,000/day) or SUVs (KES 5,000+/day).
- Why Use: Total freedom to explore at your pace—great for park visits or suburb hops. You’ll need a valid license (23-25 age minimum) and a credit card.
- Good For: Confident drivers who don’t mind left-side roads, potholes, or city traffic.
- Tip: Grab a GPS—road signs can be spotty. Lock doors and keep windows up in busy areas.
-
Traffic: Peak hours (morning and late afternoon) clog roads—plan around them.
-
Safety: Stick to well-lit areas for pickups; avoid flashy gear when hailing rides.

Top FAQs About Nairobi Tours
Everything you need to plan the perfect Nairobi Tour with Bacetion Adventures
Yes, for the vast majority of visitors who take the same care they would in any major city. The neighbourhoods couples actually spend time in, Karen, Westlands, Kilimani and Gigiri, are comfortable and well used to visitors, with reliable transport, good restaurants and established hotels. The usual advice applies, keep valuables out of sight, use Uber, Bolt or a trusted driver after dark rather than hailing a cab off the street, and avoid walking alone at night. Most couples who plan ahead and travel with a local guide have a completely uneventful, enjoyable time.
2 to 3 days cover the essentials comfortably: one for the national park and its neighbouring attractions, one for the city itself, and a third if you want to add something further out, like the tea or coffee farms in Limuru and Kiambu. Many of our own couples build a Nairobi stop into a longer Kenya trip, but Nairobi holds up well as a destination in its own right, not just a stopover before a safari elsewhere.
A great deal more. Nairobi National Park is the obvious starting point, but it sits inside a wider cluster of things worth a proper day of their own: the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust nursery, the Giraffe Centre, and the Karen Blixen Museum, all within a few minutes of each other in Karen and Lang’ata.
Beyond wildlife and history, Nairobi has a genuinely active adventure scene: jet skiing on the water at Ruiru, go-karting at Two Rivers Mall, Redhill in Limuru or Whistling Morans in Athi River, and cycling or a quiet run through Karura Forest, one of the largest gazetted forests inside any capital city. For the full list of what Nairobi National Park itself involves, see our dedicated Nairobi National Park page.
The pairing most couples come back talking about is a dawn game drive followed by the Sheldrick Nursery and the Giraffe Centre, all in one morning, then something slower in the afternoon, a walk through the Karen Blixen Museum gardens or a swim back at the hotel.
For couples who want the day built around a specific occasion, we run seven dedicated packages, honeymoon, anniversary, proposal, surprise, birthday, vacation and getaway, each structured around that same wildlife day but with its own touches.
Yes, and it is one of the more overlooked sides of the city. Jet skiing at Ruiru, go-karting at several tracks around the city, cycling through Karura Forest or out at the Tigoni tea farms, quad biking, archery, and ice skating at Panari Hotel are all real, bookable activities inside or just outside the city, most of them a half day or less. Couples who want a full adrenaline day rather than a wildlife one often combine two or three of these rather than choosing just one.
For a short stay, yes, a private driver or a booked tour is by far the easiest way to see more than one thing in a day, since distances between attractions are short in kilometres but slow in traffic.
Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt work well for single trips between fixed points, but a private vehicle with a driver guide makes far more sense for a day that includes several stops, since it removes the waiting and negotiating that comes with booking several separate rides.
June to October and January to February are Nairobi’s dry months, the easiest for wildlife viewing since animals gather at the park’s permanent water sources and the roads stay clear. November to December and March to May bring rain, greener scenery and more birds, but harder wildlife tracking and occasionally messy roads. Nairobi’s altitude keeps it mild year-round, so there is no genuinely bad month to visit, only a difference in what the days look like.
Most visitors need a Kenya eTA arranged before travel, including anyone transiting through Nairobi on a layover. Requirements change, so confirm the current rules for your nationality before you book, rather than assuming.
Yes, and this is exactly what our Nairobi Wildlife Day Tour is built around: a private vehicle for the whole day covering a dawn game drive, the Sheldrick Nursery, the Giraffe Centre, lunch and a drive back through the city, with the Karen Blixen Museum available to add on. It suits anyone with one day in Nairobi rather than a full stay, layovers and first-time visitors included.
It varies widely depending on what is included. A single attraction with a private car, the Giraffe Centre or the Sheldrick nursery on their own, starts in the low thousands of shillings per person.
A full day covering the park, both wildlife stops and lunch runs higher, and a full couple’s package with two nights in a suite higher again. We price every one of our own packages openly, cost stack included, so you can see exactly what you are paying for before you book, rather than discover extras once you arrive.
Easily, and most of our couples do. Nairobi is the natural starting point for Naivasha, Nakuru, and most other destinations we cover, close enough to add on as a day trip from the same base, or to open a longer trip before heading further afield. Tell us where else you are headed, and we will build the route around it rather than treat Nairobi as a separate booking.
The Kenyan Shilling is the local currency, and M-Pesa mobile money is used everywhere, from taxis to small vendors. Cards work fine in hotels, malls and most established restaurants, but it is worth carrying some cash for markets, boda bodas and tips.
A local SIM from Safaricom or Airtel is cheap and gives solid coverage across the city, or an eSIM works well if your phone supports one. Either way, sort connectivity before you leave the airport rather than after.
Light layers matter more than most people expect. Nairobi’s altitude keeps mornings and evenings cool even in the dry season, so bring something warm for early game drives and a jacket for the evenings.
Neutral coloured clothing suits the wildlife side of a trip, comfortable closed shoes cover most of the walking, and a hat, sunscreen and a camera round out the basics. Each of our own packages carries its own specific packing list for that particular day, so check the one that matches your plans for anything more specific.
