Explore Lake Elementaita Safaris

The Quiet Jewel of the Rift Valley

Our Lake Elementaita couple tours take you to one of the Rift Valley’s most peaceful escapes, a shallow soda lake about 120 km from Nairobi, tucked between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru.

The name comes from the Maasai word muteita, meaning “dust place”, a nod to the dry, golden country around it. The lake itself is anything but dull. It forms part of the Kenya Lake System UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a protected Ramsar wetland and is the only place in Kenya where great white pelicans breed. Greater and lesser flamingos feed in its shallows.

Picture a slow morning walk along the shore with the Sleeping Warrior hill watching over the water, Rothschild’s giraffes grazing in Soysambu Conservancy by afternoon, and a sundowner as the lake turns gold. Elementaita is quieter than its famous neighbours, and that is exactly its charm for couples.

Whether you want a romantic weekend, a honeymoon stop between Naivasha and Nakuru, or simply time away from the city, we shape every trip around your pace and the moments you want to share.

Best Time to Visit Lake Elementaita

Lake Elementaita is open all year, but timing shapes your trip. The dry months bring clear skies, easy walking and golden light, while the rains turn the valley green and quiet.

Elementaita Dry Season

Period: June to early October, and January to February

What to Expect: Warm, clear days and cool mornings, which suit shoreline walks, conservancy drives and photography. January to March is the driest stretch of the year. July to September is busier across the Rift Valley circuit, so book lodges early.

Elementaita Wet Season

Period: March to May, and November to December

What to Expect: The long rains from March to May can make murram roads and trails muddy, while the short rains usually bring lighter showers. In return you get green scenery, excellent birdlife, quieter lodges and better rates. Pack a light rain jacket.

A Note on Flamingos

Flamingo numbers at Elementaita rise and fall with water levels and food supply rather than a fixed season. Some months the shallows are busy, other months the birds move to Nakuru or Bogoria. We check recent sightings before your trip so you know what to expect.

How to Get to Lake Elementaita

Lake Elementaita lies about 120 km northwest of Nairobi, roughly 40 km past Naivasha and 45 km before Nakuru town. Most visitors come by road along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway (A104), which runs right past the lake, with the Sleeping Warrior hill as your landmark. Expect around two to two and a half hours from Nairobi, depending on traffic. Wherever you are starting from, we can meet you at the airport or your hotel and take care of the rest.

Private Transfers

Travel door to door with a driver who knows the Rift Valley roads. We arrange pickups from JKIA, Wilson Airport or your Nairobi hotel. Prefer to drive yourself? Rent a car from a top car hire company such as Bamm Tours.

By Air

For a faster arrival, light aircraft can land at the Soysambu airstrip or at Nakuru’s Lanet airstrip, followed by a short road transfer to your lodge. Ask us about charter options for honeymoons and special occasions.

By Road

Shuttles and matatus heading to Nakuru leave Nairobi throughout the day and pass Elementaita. It is the most affordable option, but you will need a pickup from the highway or from Gilgil to reach your lodge.

Highway to Lodge

Sentrim Elementaita and Lake Elementaita Lodge sit just off the highway. Serena Camp lies inside Soysambu Conservancy along murram roads, so allow extra time, especially after rain.

Getting Around

Lake Elementaita is compact and easy to explore. Whether you are watching flamingos on foot, tracking giraffes in Soysambu or pairing the lake with a game drive in Lake Nakuru, here is how to get around. Pick whatever matches your pace and budget.

Explore Soysambu Conservancy by vehicle with a guide, looking for Rothschild’s giraffes, zebras, buffalo and plenty of plains game.

  • Why Use: The best way to see the conservancy’s wildlife. Serena Camp also offers night drives.
  • Good For: Couples, families and photographers.
  • Tip: Conservancy fees apply and are separate from the KWS sanctuary fee. We include them in your quote.

Guided shoreline walks, mountain biking and horse riding are offered by the lakeside lodges.

  • Why Use: A slow, quiet way to enjoy the flamingos, pelicans and Rift Valley views.
  • Good For: Active couples and birders.
  • Tip: Go early morning or late afternoon for cooler air and softer light.

Rent a car with a driver from firms like Bamm Tours & Safaris. Options include sedans, SUVs and vans for groups.

  • Why Use: Stress-free travel with a driver who knows the A104 and the conservancy tracks. Costs vary (around KES 5,000 to 10,000 per day).
  • Good For: Day trips, combined Naivasha, Elementaita and Nakuru itineraries, and families.
  • Tip: Book through Bamm Tours & Safaris for reliability and a seamless experience.

Rent a car to drive yourself from companies like Bamm Tours & Safaris. Choose compacts (from KES 3,500 per day) or SUVs (KES 15,000+ per day).

  • Why Use: Total freedom to explore the lake, Kariandusi and Lake Nakuru at your own pace. You will need a valid licence (minimum age 29) and a credit card.
  • Good For: Confident drivers comfortable with busy highway traffic.
  • Tip: Choose an SUV or 4×4 in the rainy months, because the murram roads inside the conservancy get slippery.
  • Traffic: The Nairobi-Nakuru highway carries heavy truck traffic, so avoid driving it at night.
  • Wildlife: Animals roam freely in Soysambu. Drive slowly and stay in your vehicle unless you are with a guide.
Sunset Safari Ride by the Flamingo Lake

Soysambu Conservancy

A Private Wilderness on the Lakeshore

Lake Elementaita’s western shore belongs to Soysambu Conservancy, a 48,000-acre wildlife haven that borders Lake Nakuru National Park. It has been in the Delamere family since 1906 and became a conservancy in 2007.

Soysambu is home to more than 50 mammal species, including Rothschild’s giraffes, zebras, buffalo, eland and colobus monkeys. It also protects the rocky islands where great white pelicans nest. Couples can explore on game drives, guided walks or horseback, and then settle in at Serena Camp for a quiet night inside the conservancy.

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions about Lake Elementaita Couple Tours

Lake Elementaita couple tours are getaways planned for two, combining the lake’s flamingos, pelicans and Rift Valley views with romantic experiences. Think game drives among giraffes in Soysambu Conservancy, lakeside breakfasts, a bush dinner under the stars and quiet nights at a tented camp. We shape each trip around your pace, budget and the occasion you are celebrating.

Lake Elementaita is about 120 km northwest of Nairobi along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The drive usually takes two to two and a half hours, depending on traffic. We arrange private transfers from JKIA, Wilson Airport or your Nairobi hotel.

Yes. With an early start, a day trip comfortably covers shoreline birding, a visit to the Kariandusi Prehistoric Site and lunch by the lake. For couples, we recommend at least one night, so you can enjoy a sunset over the water, a private dinner and a slow morning together.

Often, but not always. Greater and lesser flamingos feed at Elementaita, and their numbers rise and fall with water levels and food supply, so some months are busier than others. Great white pelicans are a more reliable sight, since the lake is their only breeding site in Kenya. We check recent sightings before your trip and can add Lake Nakuru or Lake Bogoria if flamingos are your priority.

Couples can enjoy game drives and horse rides in Soysambu Conservancy, sunrise or sunset hikes up the Sleeping Warrior, a soak at the Kikopey hot springs and couples’ spa treatments at a lakeside lodge. We can also arrange a lakeside breakfast, a private bush dinner, a surprise setup or a photographer to capture the moment.

Absolutely. Elementaita is quieter and more private than most Rift Valley destinations, which makes it lovely for honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays and proposals. Serena’s Flamingo Suite, with its private Jacuzzi, is a honeymoon favourite. The lake also sits neatly between Naivasha and Lake Nakuru, so it pairs well with a longer romantic safari.

Elementaita is lovely all year. The drier months, roughly June to early October and January to February, are best for walks, drives and photography. The long rains from March to May can make murram roads muddy. The wetter months also bring green scenery, great birdlife and quieter lodges, which some couples prefer. July to September is busiest, so book early.

It depends on the length of your stay, the lodge and the activities you choose. We are building our Elementaita packages now, and in the meantime we design custom trips around your budget. As a guide, Serena Camp lists rack rates from about USD 405 per tent per night. Tell us your dates and budget, and we will send a clear quote. Payment plans are available.

Each quote states clearly which fees are included. Lake Elementaita is a Kenya Wildlife Service sanctuary, and KWS currently lists entry at KES 675 for resident adults and USD 50 for non-resident adults, with lower rates for children. Soysambu Conservancy charges its own separate fees. KWS fees are paid online through eCitizen, and because fees change, we always confirm current rates when we quote.

No. The lake is very shallow, usually under a metre deep, and highly alkaline, so it is not suitable for swimming. For a swim together, use your lodge pool or visit the Kikopey hot springs on the southern shore.

Yes, and many couples do. Elementaita is about 40 km from Naivasha and 45 km from Nakuru town, which makes it an easy middle stop on a Rift Valley lakes circuit. Try a boat ride and Hell’s Gate cycling in Naivasha, flamingos and giraffes at Elementaita and a game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park.

Bring layers for cool mornings and evenings, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars and a refillable water bottle. Add a light rain jacket between March and May or in November and December. Carry your national ID or passport to confirm your fee category, and pack something nice for that bush dinner.

Tell us what you have in mind and we will design something just for the two of you. WhatsApp us on +254 725 300 400 or fill in the enquiry form, and our team will get back to you within 20 minutes during business hours.
