LONG PACKAGE DESCRIPTION
If you are reading this, you are the one planning it. You want the moment to feel like yours, quiet and unhurried, without a crowd of strangers watching or a bill that eats into the ring. Lake Elementaita gives you that. It is the calm lake of the Rift Valley, about two hours from Nairobi on the A104, and a night away there needs no explanation at all.
You stay at Lake Elementaita Lodge, on the escarpment above the water. The lodge grew around an old farmhouse that Galbraith Cole established about a century ago, and it still feels more like a country house than a hotel, with 33 rooms, a pool and gardens that look out over the lake towards the Sleeping Warrior hill.
On the first evening, as the light turns gold over the water, you walk out to a spot in the lodge grounds that was prepared while the two of you were by the pool. A photographer is already in place at a distance, briefed on your signal. What happens next takes about a minute, and you will both remember all of it.
Afterwards there is sparkling wine, then a private bush dinner for two and a bonfire under a clear sky. The next morning, as a newly engaged couple, you walk down to the shoreline with a guide to look for great white pelicans, which breed here and nowhere else in Kenya. We agree the spot, the timing, the signal and the cover story with you on one call before you travel, and nothing is ever discussed in front of your partner. Transport from Nairobi is an optional add on.

A private spot above the lake at sunset: We agree a quiet place in the lodge grounds overlooking Lake Elementaita with the lodge in advance. Lanterns and petals are set out before you walk over, so you arrive with nothing in your hands and nothing to explain.
A photographer who stays out of sight: Positioned at a distance before you arrive and briefed on your signal, your photographer covers the proposal and the first portraits afterwards, one hour in all.
Sparkling wine for the first toast: A bottle and two glasses are waiting at the spot, so the first drink of your engagement happens right where the question was asked.
A bush dinner for two: The lodge sets a private table outdoors for the two of you, so once the answer is given there is nothing left to organise.
One quiet planning call: Before you travel, we agree the spot, the timing, the signal and your cover story directly with you. Everything at the lodge is arranged without your partner being involved.
Lake Elementaita Lodge or similar: A 33 room lodge built around Galbraith Cole's farmhouse, about 500 metres off the highway on the escarpment above the lake, with full board, a pool and gardens included in your stay.
A shoreline walk the morning after: A lodge guide takes you down towards the water early to look for great white pelicans, and your Lake Elementaita Wildlife Sanctuary fees are already paid.

Day 1: The Quiet Before
Check in at the lodge from midday. Adding our private transfer? We collect you both from your Nairobi address at 9 am for the 2 to 2.5 hour drive on the A104, and the driver keeps to whatever story you have agreed with us.
Morning: Acting Normal
The road climbs out of Nairobi and drops onto the floor of the Rift Valley. For your partner it is a weekend drive. For you it is two hours of keeping a straight face and checking, once again, that the ring is still in your pocket.
Afternoon: An Ordinary Afternoon
Lunch at the lodge, then the pool or the terrace. At some point when you are alone, our team confirms the plan with you in a few words and then never mentions it again. While you swim, the spot is quietly prepared.
Evening: The Question
As the sun drops towards the hills, you suggest a walk across the grounds. The lanterns are lit, the photographer is in place, and the lake is turning gold below you. Then it is the two of you, a ring and a question. Afterwards there is sparkling wine, a bush dinner set just for you both, and a bonfire to sit beside for as long as you want.
Day 2: The First Morning Engaged
Morning: The Shoreline Walk
An early walk with your lodge guide down towards the water, looking for pelicans while the lake is still quiet. Back for a long breakfast, the first phone calls home and plenty of looking at your hands.
Afternoon: Home, Engaged
Check out and head back to Nairobi. If you have the car, stop for nyama choma at Kikopey on the way, at your own cost. Your photographs are shared with you after the trip.
