Meru County runs from the northeastern shoulder of Mount Kenya all the way down to the Tana River, and the two ends of it feel like different countries. Up top you have Meru town, high, green and cool, with coffee, forest and mountain air. Down east you have Meru National Park, hot, wide and almost empty, 870 square kilometres fed by thirteen permanent rivers. This page covers both, because the best Meru trips use both.
Two things worth clearing up before you plan. Meru National Park is not in Meru town. It sits about 60 km east and a good deal lower, roughly an hour and a half beyond the town on the Maua road. And Mount Meru is in Tanzania. It has nothing to do with any of this.
What you get for the distance is the thing every other park has lost. Meru is quiet. You can spend a morning on the rhino sanctuary tracks or on the riverine forest circuits and pass nobody. For a couple, that is the whole point, and it is why we keep sending people here rather than somewhere closer.

Where to Eat
Inside Meru National Park
There is no restaurant scene in the park and there is nowhere to nip out to. Every camp and lodge runs full board, and that is how your Meru nights will work. Tell us about allergies, vegetarian preferences or a birthday when you book, because the kitchens are small and they plan around you.
Meru Town, Mid-Range (around KES 1,000-2,000)
The town eats well, and most of the good places sit around Makutano and Milimani. This is where you stop for a real lunch on the way in, or a proper dinner on a highland night before you drop down to the park.
Meru Town, Special Occasion (around KES 2,500 and up)
The better hotel dining rooms handle an anniversary dinner comfortably. Book a table rather than turning up, particularly at weekends.

Menu: Home-style Kenyan cooking, and freshly squeezed juices people travel for.
Why Visit: An outdoor space with trees, umbrellas and a fireplace for when the highland evening turns. Open 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The most date-shaped room in Meru.

Menu: Full hotel menu, and the most consistent kitchen in town.
Why Visit: Quiet, well run and comfortable for a long dinner. The obvious choice if you are marking something and staying in town.

Why Visit: Mountain views from the terrace and more range than anywhere else in town. Good for a slow lunch before the Maua road.

Why Visit: Relaxed, open through the day, and easy if you have arrived at an odd hour. Service can be slow when it is busy, so do not book it against a tight schedule.

Best Time to Visit Meru
Meru County has two climates at once. The park is hot lowland country where the dry months open up the game viewing, while Meru town sits high on Mount Kenya and stays cool and green almost all year. Pack for both.
Meru's Dry Month Season
Period: Late June to early October, and January to February
What to Expect: The best game viewing of the year. Grass drops, the thirteen rivers pull animals in, and the tracks stay firm. Late June through September is the cool dry stretch and the one we book most. October into early November stays good and gets even quieter. Even at its coolest the park is warm by day, so this is shorts and a hat country, with a light layer for the drive back up to Meru town.
Meru's Wet Month Season
Period: March to May for the long rains, October to December for the short rains, with November usually the wettest month
What to Expect: Meru turns spectacularly green and the birding is at its best, but the black cotton tracks go soft and some river crossings become a judgement call. A 4×4 stops being a preference and becomes the plan. March is the hottest month of the year here. If you do not mind mud and a wet afternoon, you will have one of Kenya’s great parks almost entirely to the two of you.
How to Get to Meru
Meru town is about 250 km from Nairobi and takes four and a half to five and a half hours by road. Meru National Park is a separate leg beyond that. KWS gives the full Nairobi to park distance as 348 km via Nyeri, Nanyuki and Meru, and it realistically runs five to seven hours door to gate. The Embu route to Ura Gate is shorter at 290 km, hillier and slower, and a good deal more beautiful. We usually drive up one way and back the other so you see both.
AirKenya flies Wilson (WIL) to the park’s airstrips. Roughly an hour in the air against a day on the road.
Coaches and shuttles run Nairobi to Meru town through the day. There is no rail service to Meru.
A2 via Nyeri and Nanyuki for speed, or the Embu road for the views. Both are tarmac most of the way.
Meru town to Murera Gate runs about 60 km through Maua and takes over an hour. Maua to the gate is the last 35 km.

Where to Stay
Meru gives you two very different beds. In the park, Elewana Elsa’s Kopje is built into the rock of Mughwango Hill on the site of George Adamson’s original camp, with open-fronted cottages, a pool cut into the hillside and a view across country that stays empty all day. It is the reason a lot of couples come to Meru at all.
In Meru town, Alba Hotel and Three Steers are the comfortable stops for the night before or after the park, both in Makutano with good kitchens and a pool. Most of our Meru trips use one town night and the rest in the bush.

Getting Around
Meru is a long way from everything, and the park is big and lightly tracked. Getting this part right matters more here than it does closer to Nairobi. Here is how it actually works.
Details: Meru National Park gates open at 6:00 AM and close at 6:00 PM. Fees are paid in advance through KWSPay on eCitizen, and you carry the QR receipt for the gate. One ticket also covers the adjoining Kora, Bisanadi and Mwingi reserves.
Why it matters: The park is 870 square kilometres with long distances between circuits, so a half-day here covers less ground than a full day at a small park. Plan two nights minimum.
Tip: The rhino sanctuary is the one thing not to leave to chance. Ask your guide to radio ahead so the rangers can point you at where the animals actually are that morning.
Details: Meru is one of the KWS parks that lists guided walking safaris on its tariff, in small groups with an armed ranger, arranged in advance.
Why it matters: This is the thing Meru has that most parks do not. Walking changes the pace of a trip completely, and for a couple it beats another hour in a vehicle.
Tip: Book it when you book the trip, not at the gate. Rangers are assigned ahead and numbers are capped.
Details: A 4×4 with a driver-guide from Bamm Tours & Safaris, which is how every Meru package here runs unless you ask otherwise.
Why Consider: It is a long drive on the way in and a genuinely trackless park once you are there. A guide who knows which river crossings are passable this month is not a luxury in Meru.
Tip: Tell your guide if you are marking an anniversary. Elsa’s grave and the Adamson sites make a quieter, more personal morning than another game circuit.
Details: Self-drive is possible but Meru is not the park to learn in. You need a proper high-clearance 4×4, not a soft-roader, and the internal tracks are lightly signed.
Good For: Experienced Kenya drivers travelling with time to spare.
Tip: Fuel in Meru town or Maua. There is no fuel in the park, and the nearest pump from the far circuits is a long way back.
Two climates: Meru town is cool and can be wet. The park is hot. Pack for both in the same bag.
Connectivity: Signal is patchy in the park and most camps are happy about that. Tell people at home before you go quiet.
Timing: Leave Nairobi early. Arriving at a gate near closing time is the classic Meru mistake.

Where Elsa's Story Actually Happened
This is where Joy and George Adamson raised and released Elsa, and where Joy wrote the book that became Born Free. Elsa is buried in the park near the stream she favoured, Pippa the cheetah is buried here too, and George’s old camp is the ground Elsa’s Kopje now stands on. You can visit the graves. It is a strange and quiet thing to do together, and most couples who go find it lands harder than they expected. Meru has kept the emptiness that made the story possible in the first place, which is the real reason to come.

Straight answers before you book.
No, Meru National Park is about 60 km east of Meru town and takes over an hour to reach through Maua. They are both in Meru County but they are different trips, at different altitudes, with different weather. Meru town is cool highland country on Mount Kenya’s slopes. The park is hot lowland. Mount Meru, for the record, is in Tanzania and has nothing to do with either.
Allow four and a half to five and a half hours to Meru town, and five to seven hours to the gates of Meru National Park. KWS gives the Nairobi to park distance as 348 km via Nyeri, Nanyuki and Meru, or 290 km via Embu to Ura Gate. The Embu route is more scenic and slower. Flying from Wilson Airport takes about an hour instead.
Non-resident adults pay USD 70 per person per 24 hours, following the KWS fee revision that took effect on 1 October 2025. Meru is classified as a wilderness park, so it costs less than premium parks like Amboseli and Lake Nakuru. East African citizens and Kenya residents pay considerably less in shillings. Fees go through KWSPay on eCitizen rather than cash at the gate, and one ticket also covers Kora, Bisanadi and Mwingi. The 2025 rates faced a court challenge, so confirm the current figure with us when you book.
Yes, Meru is one of the KWS parks that permits guided walking safaris, in small groups with an armed ranger and arranged in advance. This is unusual and it is one of the strongest reasons to choose Meru over a park closer to Nairobi. Book it when you book the trip rather than asking at the gate.
Meru’s fenced rhino sanctuary gives you the most reliable rhino sighting of any part of the trip, with both black and white rhino inside it. Beyond that the park holds elephant, buffalo, hippo, lion, leopard and cheetah, plus northern species you will not see in the Rift Valley parks: reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, lesser kudu and beisa oryx. KWS records over 427 bird species. Cats are present but genuinely elusive in the long grass, so treat them as a bonus rather than the plan.
Late June to early October is the best window for Meru, with January and February also strong. Grass is short, the rivers concentrate the game and the tracks stay firm. October into early November is quieter still. The long rains from March to May and the short rains through November soften the black cotton tracks and make a 4×4 essential, though the birding and the green are exceptional.
Meru County holds far more than the park. The Meru National Museum in town sits in a 1916 colonial building and covers Meru history and culture properly. Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve on Mount Kenya’s northern foothills has a canopy walkway and blue pools you can swim in. The Nyambene Hills and the Igombe crater sit north of the park, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is within reach to the west, and the Chogoria route up Mount Kenya starts in this county. If you want to extend, Nanyuki pairs naturally with Meru.
