Affordable Getaway Mombasa SGR | 3 Days 2 Nights

Couple Packages
Getaways

Mombasa Beach Hotel or similar

No occasion, no reason, no eleven hour drive. Just three days somewhere else.

An Affordable Getaway Mombasa SGR package for couples who do not need a reason.

Nobody is having a birthday. Nothing is being celebrated. You are simply tired, the city has been relentless, and neither of you has had a conversation longer than twenty minutes in about a month.

That is a good enough reason and it is the one nobody books on, because a trip with no occasion attached is the first thing to get postponed. There is always a month that suits better. There never is.

So this is built to be easy to say yes to. Three days, which fits a long weekend without leave. One train out and one train back, so nobody is doing the Mombasa Road at four in the morning and nobody is doing it tired on the way home. Half board, so the only meal either of you has to think about is lunch. A car and driver on the last day so checkout at ten does not leave you sitting in a lobby with your bags for five hours.

Day two has nothing in it. That is not an oversight. If you wanted an itinerary you would have booked a safari.

As weekend getaways from Nairobi go, the coast is the one that actually feels far without being hard to reach. Naivasha is closer. Nanyuki is prettier in a certain light. Neither of them is the Indian Ocean, and neither of them lets you read a book for six hours on the way there.

About Package

More information about this package

Every room faces the sea: Mombasa Beach Hotel has 152 rooms and each one opens onto a private balcony over the Indian Ocean. On a trip whose entire purpose is to stop moving, where the room looks is not a detail.

Built to absorb a whole day: outdoor pool, children's pool, mature tropical gardens, two restaurants, a café and a beauty salon and spa on site. Day two only works if the property can carry it without you leaving, and this one can.

The Cavern Beach Bistro: built into the coral rock at the water's edge, which is where the afternoon tends to end up without anyone booking anything.

Gardens with real shade: mature tropical planting rather than new landscaping, so there is somewhere to sit at two in the afternoon when the coast is at its heaviest.

The reef is directly offshore: Mombasa Marine National Park sits in front of the hotel, so if the doing nothing wears thin, snorkelling or the glass bottom boat is a short ride rather than a half day expedition.

Fifteen minutes from town: roughly 7 km from the Mombasa CBD and 1.6 km from City Mall and Nyali Centre, which keeps day three flexible and keeps the transfer from Miritini the shortest of any North Coast property.

Package Itinerary

The package itinerary is as follows

Affordable Getaway Mombasa SGR Itinerary with Baecation Adventures from Nairobi

Day One: Out of the city

Boarding at Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau for the eight o'clock departure, with the link train from Nairobi Central at 6:40am if you are coming through town. Six hours, no driving, no roadworks and no overtaking lorries. Tsavo comes up mid morning with game close enough to the line to point out, and the rest of it is the two of you and a window.

Miritini in the early afternoon. Your driver meets you on the platform rather than in the car park, so nobody starts the weekend negotiating with touts. Through Changamwe and over Nyali Bridge to the hotel, with the rest of the afternoon on the beach or at the pool.

Dinner is at the hotel. The sand at Nyali holds the day's heat well after dark, which makes for a long walk afterwards if either of you wants one.

Day Two: Deliberately empty

Breakfast whenever you get to it. The tide runs a long way out in the morning and the flats in front of the hotel are the best walking on this stretch of coast.

Through the middle of the day the pool and the gardens do the work, with the spa on site if either of you wants an hour out of the sun. If doing nothing turns out to be harder than expected, the Marine Park reef is directly offshore and a snorkelling trip or the glass bottom boat can be arranged the same morning.

Dinner is covered again, so the evening asks nothing of you either.

Day Three: Checkout, then the city

Breakfast, then the room goes back at ten. Your bags go into the car rather than a luggage store and the driver stays with you until the train.

The car is yours for the day. Fort Jesus and the carved doors of Old Town, or Haller Park and the giraffe feeding platform, or a long lunch on the creek and nothing else at all. You decide on the morning.

The driver has you at Miritini in good time for the three o'clock departure, and Nairobi Terminus comes up at around twenty past eight. Work on Monday, but you will have been somewhere.
