Mombasa Beach Hotel or similar

The holiday you have been saying you will take, costed properly and short enough to actually book.

An Affordable Vacation Mombasa SGR package for the trip you have been talking about for two years.

There is a difference between getting away and going on holiday. Getting away is reactive. A holiday is something you choose, put in the calendar and look forward to for a month, and the looking forward is half of what you are paying for.

This is the shortest version of a coast holiday that still feels like one. Three days, two nights, both train legs in First Class, breakfast and dinner covered and a room facing the ocean. It fits a long weekend, which is the only reason most couples ever take it, and the whole cost is on this page rather than revealed in stages.

It is also the package most people extend. Two nights is the starting point, not the ceiling. Add a third or a fourth and only the accommodation changes, since the train and the transfers cost the same either way. If you want to go further, the same group runs lodges in Tsavo, so the coast and a bush stop can be one trip on the way home.

On the best time to visit Mombasa, the honest answer is that the coast works year round and the differences are smaller than people expect.

June to October is dry and cooler, which is the easiest weather and the busiest hotels. January and February are hot, clear and quieter. The long rains in April and May bring the cheapest rates of the year and genuinely green coastline, and the rain tends to come hard and briefly rather than settling in for the day. Late December is beautiful and carries a festive supplement at every hotel on this coast, so it needs quoting separately.

About Package

More information about this package

Every room faces the sea: Mombasa Beach Hotel has 152 rooms and each one opens onto a private balcony over the Indian Ocean. On a holiday rather than an overnight, the room stops being somewhere to sleep and starts being somewhere you spend real time.

Room to grow the trip: 145 standard rooms plus six executive and deluxe suites, and the property is large enough that extending by a night or two rarely runs into availability. That is not true of the boutique properties on this coast.

Full board and all inclusive both available: the meal plan can be moved up rather than being fixed, which matters on a longer stay where a third and fourth lunch start to add up.

The Cavern Beach Bistro: built into the coral rock at the water's edge, so there is somewhere to eat that is not the main restaurant without leaving the property.

The reef is directly offshore: Mombasa Marine National Park sits in front of the hotel, putting snorkelling and the glass bottom boat a short ride from the beach rather than a half day trip.

Part of Kenya Safari Lodges and Hotels: the same group operates Voi and Ngulia Safari Lodges in Tsavo, both close to the railway line, which makes a coast and bush combination straightforward rather than a second booking.

Package Itinerary

The package itinerary is as follows

Affordable Vacation Mombasa SGR Itinerary with Baecation Adventures from Nairobi

Day One: The journey is part of it

Boarding at Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau for the eight o'clock departure, with the link train from Nairobi Central at 6:40am if you are coming through town. The line crosses Tsavo mid morning and the game sits close enough to the track to count, which is the part nobody expects to enjoy and everybody does.

Miritini in the early afternoon. Your driver meets you on the platform rather than in the car park, then through Changamwe and over Nyali Bridge to the hotel. Check in and take the rest of the afternoon on the beach or at the pool.

Dinner is at the hotel. The sand at Nyali holds the heat of the day long after dark.

Day Two: The full day

Breakfast at your own pace. The tide runs a long way out in the morning and the flats in front of the hotel are the best walking on this stretch of coast.

The middle of the day belongs to the pool, the gardens or the spa. If you want the water, the Marine Park reef is directly offshore and both the snorkelling trip and the glass bottom boat can be arranged the same morning.

Dinner is covered. The Tamarind dhow sails in the evening if you want one night that is different from the other, with pickup from the hotel and dinner cooked on deck as you pass Fort Jesus lit against the water.

Day Three: Checkout, then the city

Breakfast, then the room goes back at ten. Your bags go into the car rather than a luggage store and the driver stays with you until the train.

The car is yours for the day. Fort Jesus and the carved doors of Old Town, or Haller Park and the giraffe feeding platform, or a long lunch on the creek. You decide on the morning rather than in advance.

The driver has you at Miritini in good time for the three o'clock departure, and Nairobi Terminus comes up at around twenty past eight.

The original ID used to book your train tickets. Not a copy and not a photo. Kenya Railways tickets are tied to the named passenger and you will not be allowed to board without the document you booked with
Light cotton clothing. The coast is humid year round and nothing heavy gets worn
Swimwear and a cover up
Something modest for Old Town. It is a residential Muslim neighbourhood and covered shoulders and knees are the respectful minimum
