Three hours later you are through the gate of Lake Nakuru National Park.
The reason Nakuru works so well for a surprise is that it is close enough to be plausible and far enough to feel like a real trip. You are not spending the first day in a car. You leave after breakfast, you climb the Rift Valley escarpment with the whole valley opening up below, and you are checking in to a lodge inside the park in time for lunch. By late afternoon you are on your first game drive.

Close enough to stay plausible: Lake Nakuru sits about 160 kilometres from Nairobi, roughly three hours by road. That is short enough that you can leave after a normal breakfast without needing an excuse for a five o'clock start, and long enough that the trip feels like somewhere, not a day out.
We can pack for them: Tell us their sizes and we will have the lodge ready with anything missing, or send you a packing list you can quietly fill on their behalf the night before. Most surprises come undone at a suitcase, so this is the part worth handing over.
Inside the gate: Lake Nakuru Lodge sits within the national park, so game drives start from the car park and the best hours of light are already yours. No morning gate queue, no racing back before six.
Kenya's first rhino sanctuary: The park is fenced and compact, which makes it one of the most reliable places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino. Rothschild's giraffe browse the acacia line, and there are lion, leopard and buffalo alongside them. For someone who did not know they were going on safari this morning, it delivers quickly.
A vehicle that is yours alone: The Toyota Hiace tour van with its driver guide stays with you from the Nairobi pickup to the Nairobi drop off. Nobody else in the back row and nobody else's schedule, which matters when the whole point is that this is about the two of you.
Rooms that face the lake: All rooms open onto a private balcony or patio with lake or escarpment views, with a separate sitting area and a deep soaking bath. There is a pool, a poolside bar and a terrace restaurant, so the hours between drives look after themselves.

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park
Morning: The van outside the door
Pickup from your Nairobi home at 7:00 am in a private Toyota Hiace tour van. However you choose to handle the reveal, the vehicle is there and the bags are already in it if you have arranged that with us. The road runs northwest and climbs onto the Rift Valley escarpment, where the viewpoint opens onto the whole valley floor. Stop for as long as you want, because there is nowhere you need to be yet.
Afternoon: Checking in to somewhere they did not know existed this morning
Through the park gate and in to the lodge, roughly three hours from Nairobi with the stop. Check in, lunch on the terrace, then a couple of unhurried hours to swim or simply sit with the view and let it land.
Evening: First game drive
Out in the late afternoon with the roof open, down toward the shore as the animals move to water. Buffalo in the open, waterbuck in the shallows and a genuine chance at rhino on the first drive. Dinner back at the lodge after sunset.
Day 2: A full day inside the park
Morning: Out before the heat
An early start with coffee before you leave. The hour after first light is when predators are still moving and the light is worth carrying a camera for. Your driver guide works the rhino territory and the acacia line where Rothschild's giraffe browse. Back for a full breakfast whenever you are ready.
Afternoon: Baboon Cliff and the viewpoints
A slow midday at the pool, then the afternoon drive climbs to the escarpment. Baboon Cliff and Lion Hill look down across the whole lake and the bare acacia woodland standing in the shallow water, with fish eagles and pelicans working the branches. This is the photograph that ends up on the wall.
Evening: A table away from the others
Dinner arranged in advance as your table rather than just another booking, with whatever you have added to it waiting when you sit down.
Day 3: Last drive and the road home
Morning: One more time through
A final early game drive before breakfast on a different loop from the previous days. Third drives have a way of producing what the first two did not.
Afternoon: Back to Nairobi
Breakfast, checkout, and out through the gate for the drive south, with your van dropping you at your Nairobi address in the mid afternoon.

What To Carry
Original national ID or passport for each of you, which KWS now requires at the gate. Photocopies and phone photos are not accepted and anyone without originals is charged the full non resident rate regardless of what the receipt says. Their ID is the one thing you cannot forget on their behalf
Warm layer or fleece each for early morning drives, because the Rift Valley floor is cold before sunrise
Neutral coloured clothing in khaki, beige or olive for game drives
