Sometimes the reason is just that it has been a long few months, you have barely been in the same room, and the idea of three days where neither of you has to answer anything sounds better than any gift either of you could buy.
Lake Nakuru is close enough to make that easy. About 160 kilometres from Nairobi, roughly three hours by road, which means you leave on a Friday morning after breakfast and you are having lunch inside a national park. No flights, no early start, no logistics that need managing for a week beforehand.
Once you are through the gate the pace changes on its own. You have your own Toyota Hiace tour van with an opening viewing roof and your own driver guide for all three days, so the trip runs entirely at your speed. Out at first light if you want the best of the wildlife, or breakfast at nine and a long morning by the pool if the point of coming was to stop moving for a while. There is no group to keep up with and no itinerary that punishes you for ignoring it.
The park does not need much selling. It is Kenya's first rhino sanctuary, fenced and compact, which is why both black and white rhino are seen here more reliably than almost anywhere else in the country. Rothschild's giraffe browse the acacia line. The escarpment viewpoints look down across the whole lake and the drowned acacia woodland standing in the shallows, with fish eagles working the bare branches.
And because it is full board at Lake Nakuru Lodge, nothing gets counted while you are there. Meals arrive, the pool is outside, the balcony faces the lake.

No occasion, no theme, no setup: This package is built for couples who simply want to be somewhere else together for three days. There is nothing to plan, nothing to announce and no moment anyone has to arrange.
A Friday you can actually leave on: Lake Nakuru is about three hours from Nairobi by road. You can finish the week normally, leave the next morning after breakfast and still be on a game drive by late afternoon, which is not true of most safari destinations from Nairobi.
Inside the gate, so the pace is yours: Lake Nakuru Lodge sits within the national park. Game drives start from the car park, there is no queue at the gate in the morning and no six o'clock deadline to beat, so the days can be as early or as slow as you feel like making them.
Kenya's first rhino sanctuary: Fenced and compact, this is one of the most reliable places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino. Rothschild's giraffe, lion, leopard and buffalo are all here, which gives you four of the big five in a park you can cover properly across two days without rushing.
A vehicle that belongs to the two of you: The Toyota Hiace tour van and driver guide stay with you from your Nairobi pickup to your Nairobi drop off. Nobody else in the back row, nobody else's schedule, and no waiting while someone finishes a photograph.
Full board, so nothing is transactional: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included for both of you across the whole stay. On a trip whose entire point is not thinking about anything, not thinking about the bill turns out to matter.
Somewhere to do nothing: Rooms open onto a private balcony or patio with lake or escarpment views, with a separate sitting area and a deep soaking bath. There is a pool, a poolside bar, a terrace restaurant and a treatment room, so the hours between drives have somewhere to go if you want them to, and nowhere to be if you do not.

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park
Morning: Leaving without ceremony
Pickup from your Nairobi home or hotel at 7:00 am in your private Toyota Hiace tour van. The road runs northwest and climbs onto the Rift Valley escarpment, where the viewpoint opens onto the whole valley floor. Stop for as long as you want. There is nothing waiting for you at the other end except lunch.
Afternoon: Through the gate
Into the park and in to the lodge, roughly three hours from Nairobi with the stop. Check in, lunch on the terrace, then the afternoon is open. Pool, balcony, or a long nap that neither of you has to justify.
Evening: First game drive
Out with the roof open as the light softens, down toward the lake shore where the animals come to water. Buffalo in the open, waterbuck in the shallows and a real chance at rhino on the first drive out. Dinner back at the lodge after sunset.
Day 2: A whole day with nothing booked
Morning: Early or not, your call
An early drive for the hour after first light, when predators are still moving and the light is best. Or breakfast at nine and nothing before eleven. The vehicle is yours, so this is a genuine choice. If you go out, your driver guide works the rhino territory and the acacia line where Rothschild's giraffe browse.
Afternoon: The long view
A slow midday at the pool, then out again as the light turns. The road climbs to Baboon Cliff and Lion Hill, looking down across the whole lake and the bare acacia trunks standing in the shallow water, with fish eagles and pelicans on the branches. If you have added a sundowner, it is set up waiting.
Evening: Dinner and an early night
Dinner on the terrace with the lake going dark below, then back to a balcony that faces it. Nothing scheduled and nobody expecting you anywhere.
Day 3: Last drive and the road home
Morning: One more loop
A final early game drive before breakfast on a different route from the previous days. Third drives often turn up what the first two did not, and there is no pressure either way.
Afternoon: Back to Nairobi
Breakfast, checkout, and out through the gate for the drive south, with your van dropping you at your Nairobi address in the mid afternoon. Enough of the day left to land before Monday.
