Lake Nakuru Lodge

An Affordable Vacation Nakuru Safari for couples who want a proper safari without a Mara budget.

Most couples planning their first real safari together start by looking at the Masai Mara, work out what three nights there costs, and then quietly put the whole idea back on the shelf for another year.

Lake Nakuru is the answer to that.

It is a full national park, not a conservancy or a private ranch. It is Kenya's first rhino sanctuary, fenced and compact, which is why sightings of both black and white rhino here are among the most reliable anywhere in the country. Rothschild's giraffe browse the acacia line, and there are lion, leopard and buffalo alongside them. That is four of the big five in a park small enough to cover properly across two days rather than skim across five.

It is also three hours from Nairobi by road. No domestic flight, no internal transfer, no losing a day of your holiday to getting there. You leave after breakfast and you are inside the park by lunch.

You stay at Lake Nakuru Lodge, inside the gate, which is the part that separates this from a day trip. Your game drives start from the car park. You are out at first light while the day visitors are still on the highway, and you are still out at the end of the afternoon when they have had to leave. Those two hours at either end of the day are when the park is actually worth seeing.

The vehicle is yours for all three days. A Toyota Hiace tour van with an opening viewing roof and a driver guide who works for the two of you alone, so nothing runs to a group timetable and nobody else decides when it is time to move on.

Full board throughout, so from arrival lunch to departure breakfast the meals simply arrive.

Three days. Two nights. A real safari, on a budget that does not require a year of saving.

About Package

More information about this package

A real national park, not a compromise: Lake Nakuru is a full KWS national park and Kenya's first rhino sanctuary. It is also a Ramsar listed wetland with over four hundred and fifty recorded bird species. This is not a scaled down version of a safari, it is a different park with different strengths.

Four of the big five in two days: Black and white rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo are all here. There are no elephants at Nakuru, which is the one honest gap, but the fenced and compact layout makes everything else considerably easier to find than in a park many times the size.

The rarest giraffe in Kenya: Rothschild's giraffe, a subspecies with only a few thousand individuals left in the wild, browse the acacia woodland here. Most visitors photograph them without realising what they are looking at.

No flight, no lost day: About 160 kilometres from Nairobi, roughly three hours by road. On a short trip that matters enormously, because it is the difference between two nights of safari and two nights of travelling.

Inside the gate, which is the whole point: Lake Nakuru Lodge sits within the park. Game drives begin from the car park, with no morning gate queue and no six o'clock closing deadline to beat. First and last light, the two hours the park is genuinely at its best, are yours and not available to anyone on a day trip.

A private vehicle throughout: The Toyota Hiace tour van and driver guide stay with you from your Nairobi pickup to your Nairobi drop off. No shared back row, no group timetable and no waiting. On a first safari this is what separates a good trip from a frustrating one.

Full board with a pool to come back to: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included across the whole stay. Rooms open onto a private balcony or patio with lake or escarpment views, with a separate sitting area and a deep soaking bath, and there is a pool, a poolside bar and a terrace restaurant for the middle of the day.

Package Itinerary

The package itinerary is as follows

Affordable Vacation Nakuru Safari Itinerary with Baecation Adventures from Nairobi
Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park

Morning: The Rift Valley opens up
Pickup from your Nairobi home or hotel at 7:00 am in your private Toyota Hiace tour van. The road climbs northwest out of the city and reaches the escarpment viewpoint, where the entire Rift Valley floor drops away below you with the volcanoes of Longonot and Suswa out on the plain. Your driver guide stops for as long as you want.

Afternoon: Into the park
Through the gate and in to the lodge, roughly three hours from Nairobi with the stop. Check in, lunch on the terrace, then a couple of hours to settle before the afternoon starts.

Evening: First game drive
Out with the roof open as the heat drops, heading down toward the lake shore where the animals come to water. Buffalo in the open, waterbuck in the shallows, and a genuine chance at white rhino on the very first drive out.

Day 2: A full day in the park

Morning: First light, when it counts
An early start with coffee before you leave. The hour after sunrise is when predators are still moving and when the park belongs to the people staying inside it. Your driver guide works the rhino territory and the acacia line where Rothschild's giraffe browse. Back for a full breakfast when you are ready.

Afternoon: Baboon Cliff and the drowned forest
A slow midday at the pool, then the afternoon drive climbs the escarpment to Baboon Cliff and Lion Hill. The view runs across the whole lake and the bare acacia trunks standing in the shallow water, a stretch of drowned woodland left behind as the lake rose, with fish eagles and great white pelicans working the branches.

Evening: Dinner on the terrace
Back to the lodge as the light goes, dinner on the terrace with the lake dark below, and an early night before another early start.

Day 3: Last drive and the road home

Morning: A different loop
A final early game drive before breakfast, taking a route you have not used yet. Makalia Falls sits at the southern end of the park if the water is running, and the southern woodland is quieter than the shoreline circuits.

Afternoon: Back to Nairobi
Breakfast, checkout, and out through the gate for the drive south, with your van dropping you at your Nairobi address in the mid afternoon.
