Our Affordable Anniversary Samburu Safari takes the two of you north to the Ewaso Nyiro River for three days of private game drives, rare wildlife and quiet evenings by the water.
Samburu does not look like the Kenya on most postcards. The grass gives way to red earth, doum palms line the river and the animals have adapted to a drier, harder country. Grevy's zebra with their narrow stripes, reticulated giraffe patterned like cracked clay, gerenuk standing on their hind legs to reach acacia leaves, beisa oryx and the blue necked Somali ostrich: together they make up the Samburu Special Five, and you will not find them together on the Masai Mara or Lake Nakuru circuit.
The road north is long, about five to six hours from Nairobi, and we will not pretend otherwise. It passes Mount Kenya and crosses the Equator at Nanyuki, and by the time the land turns dry and open beyond Isiolo, the city feels a long way behind you. That distance is exactly what makes this a good place to mark a year together. There is no signal worth chasing and very little to do between game drives except sit by the river and talk.
Your safari is private. The van, the driver guide and the pace belong to the two of you, so a long stop with a herd of elephants at the water is never cut short for someone else's schedule. On your first night the room is dressed for your anniversary, and on the second evening, after a full day in the reserve, the river at sunset is yours.

Your Lodge: Samburu Elephant Lodge is a small, privately owned lodge on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro, with only a handful of villas and cottages, so it feels personal rather than busy. It is run by members of the local community, and that shows in the welcome.
Riverside Pool: The pool looks out over the river country and is the best place to spend the hot middle of the day between morning and afternoon game drives.
Elephants Close By: The lodge earns its name. Elephant herds come down to the river nearby and are often seen from the grounds, especially in the dry months.
Full Board Dining: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, with light, fresh meals and more than one spot to eat with a view.
Private Game Drives: You travel in your own tour van with a pop up roof and a driver guide who knows the reserve, so you stop when you want and stay as long as you like.
The Special Five: Samburu's dry country specialists, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, are the reason to come this far north, and your guide will work to find all five.

Day 1: The Road North
Morning: Leaving the City Behind
We collect you from your home or hotel in Nairobi at 6am. The drive runs north through the farmland of Central Kenya, with Mount Kenya showing on a clear morning, and a stop at the Equator in Nanyuki to stretch your legs and take the obligatory photo with one foot in each hemisphere.
Afternoon: Into Samburu
Beyond Isiolo the country opens up and turns dry and red. You arrive at the lodge in time for lunch, settle in, then head out on your first game drive as the heat eases, with a good chance of elephants along the river and your first sight of the Special Five.
Evening: Your Anniversary Welcome
Back at the lodge, your room is waiting with petals, candles, a small cake and a card. Dinner is at the lodge, and the night sounds of the river do the rest.
Day 2: A Full Day in the Reserve
Morning: Out at First Light
The best game viewing in Samburu is early, before the sun gets strong. Your guide heads out while the animals are moving, looking for gerenuk in the acacia, oryx on the open plains and the big cats that hunt along the river.
Afternoon: The Quiet Hours
Midday belongs to the pool and a long lunch. In the late afternoon you head out again, following the river where elephants come down to drink and crocodiles wait in the shallows.
Evening: Sunset by the Ewaso Nyiro
This is your anniversary evening. Before the trip, each of you writes a short letter to the other. Tonight, with the river turning gold below you, you exchange them. Dinner follows at the lodge.
Day 3: One Last Drive, Then Home
Morning: A Final Look
A short early game drive for anything you missed, then back for breakfast and a slow checkout.
Afternoon: The Road South
The drive back to Nairobi retraces the route past Isiolo, Nanyuki and Mount Kenya, with a stop along the way for lunch at your own cost.
Evening: Home
We drop you at your home or hotel in Nairobi in the early evening, a year older together and a little dustier.
