Our Affordable Getaway Samburu Safari is three days in Kenya's quiet north for couples who simply need time together, with private game drives, a small riverside lodge and very little else on the calendar.
Not every trip needs a reason. Sometimes the calendar has been full for too long, the conversations have shrunk to logistics and the two of you just need to be somewhere else for a while. Samburu is about as far from ordinary life as a weekend can take you.
The drive north takes five to six hours, past Mount Kenya and over the Equator at Nanyuki, and it is part of the reset. By the time the tarmac runs through dry, open country beyond Isiolo, work feels distant. What waits at the end is a quieter reserve than the Mara, home to the Samburu Special Five: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, plus elephants that come down to the river in the afternoons.
There is no programme to keep up with. Your van and driver guide are yours alone, game drives run at the cool ends of the day, and the hot middle hours belong to the pool, a book and each other. On the second night, step out onto the lodge grounds after dinner and look up. Far from any big city, the northern sky is full of stars.

Home by the River: Samburu Elephant Lodge is a small, privately owned lodge on the Ewaso Nyiro, with only a few villas and cottages. It is run by people from the local community, and the pace and the welcome reflect it.
The Middle of the Day: The pool looks out across the river country, which makes the hottest hours, when the animals rest too, the easiest part of the day.
Neighbours With Trunks: Elephant herds drink at the river near the lodge and are regularly seen from the grounds, above all in the dry months.
Nothing to Plan: Full board covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, so the only decisions are when to eat and where to sit.
A Van for Two: Your own tour van with a pop up roof and a driver guide who goes where you want, when you want, with nobody else to wait for.
The Samburu Special Five: Five dry country animals that most safaris never show you, and the reason this corner of Kenya feels so different from the Mara.

Day 1: Leaving It All Behind
Morning: The Long Road North
We pick you up at your home or hotel in Nairobi at 6am. The road climbs through Central Kenya past the slopes of Mount Kenya, with a break at the Equator in Nanyuki.
Afternoon: Arriving in the Dry Country
North of Isiolo the green fades to red earth and thorn scrub. Lunch is waiting at the lodge, and once you have unpacked, your first game drive heads out as the day cools.
Evening: Dinner and an Early Night
A relaxed dinner at the lodge. The early mornings here reward an early night.
Day 2: A Day With Nowhere Else to Be
Morning: Dawn in the Reserve
The first drive leaves at first light, the best time to catch lions and leopards on the move and the Special Five out feeding before the heat.
Afternoon: The Slow Hours
Back for lunch, then the pool, a nap or a long conversation in the shade. Late in the afternoon you head to the river, where elephants come to drink and bathe.
Evening: Under Northern Skies
After dinner, step out onto the lodge grounds and look up. Far from any big city's glow, the stars take over the sky.
Day 3: Back to Real Life, Slowly
Morning: One Last Drive
A short early drive, then breakfast and checkout without any rush.
Afternoon: South Again
The drive home follows the same road past Isiolo, Nanyuki and Mount Kenya, with a lunch stop on the way at your own cost.
Evening: Home in Nairobi
We drop you at your home or hotel in the early evening, rested in a way a weekend in town never manages.
