Our Romantic Samburu Flying Safari swaps the long road north for a short flight from Wilson Airport, taking the two of you to a riverside tented camp inside Samburu National Reserve for three days of game drives and slow evenings by the water.
The road to Samburu is beautiful, but it is five to six hours each way. Fly instead and the trip changes shape. You board a light aircraft at Wilson in the morning, watch Mount Kenya slide past the window, and land on a dirt airstrip in the dry north in time for your first game drive on the way to camp.
Home for two nights is Samburu Intrepids, a tented camp on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro inside Samburu National Reserve. The tents stand on raised decks under palm thatch, each with a four poster bed and a view over the river, where elephants come down to drink and crocodiles haul out on the sand.
With the travel time gone, the whole trip becomes the safari. Two game drives a day in open sided vehicles go looking for the Samburu Special Five, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, along with lions, leopards and the big elephant herds the river is known for. In between there is the pool, a long lunch on the terrace and, after dark, a northern sky full of stars. On the third morning you fly back to Wilson.

Samburu Intrepids: A tented camp on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro, deep inside Samburu National Reserve, with its tents spread along the river for privacy and shaded by tall acacia trees.
Tents on the River: Each tent sits on a raised deck under a palm thatched roof, with a four poster king size bed, an en suite bathroom and a private view over the riverbank.
Fly In, Skip the Road: Return scheduled flights between Wilson Airport and Kalama airstrip replace ten or more hours of driving, and the camp meets you at the airstrip.
Two Game Drives a Day: Morning and afternoon drives in the camp's open sided safari vehicles, with guides who know where the Special Five feed and where the elephants cross.
Dining by the River: Breakfast and lunch are served on a terrace overlooking the river, with dinner in the main dining room, all included on full board.
Pool in the Dry Country: A freeform pool behind the bar, with shaded loungers, is the place to spend the hot middle of the day.
Northern Night Skies: Far from city light, the camp's clear equatorial nights are made for looking up after dinner.

Day 1: Fly North
Morning: Wilson to Samburu
Check in at Wilson Airport for your morning flight north. From the window, farmland gives way to the slopes of Mount Kenya and then to open red country. At Kalama airstrip your camp guide is waiting, and the drive to camp doubles as your first game drive.
Afternoon: Settling In by the River
Lunch on the terrace above the Ewaso Nyiro, a rest in your tent or by the pool, then an afternoon game drive as the heat eases.
Evening: First Night in Camp
Dinner at camp, then the sounds of the river from your deck.
Day 2: A Full Day in the Reserve
Morning: Out at First Light
Coffee in your tent, then out early while lions and leopards are still moving and the Special Five are feeding in the cool.
Afternoon: The River in the Heat
Back for breakfast and lunch, the pool through the hottest hours, and an afternoon drive along the river where elephants gather to drink.
Evening: Stars Over Samburu
Dinner at camp and a last look at the night sky from your deck.
Day 3: One Last Drive, Then Fly Home
Morning: Final Game Drive
An early drive for anything still on your list, then breakfast and checkout.
Afternoon: Back to Nairobi
Your guide drives you to Kalama airstrip for the flight south, landing back at Wilson Airport around midday, depending on the flight schedule.
Evening: Home Early
With the long road skipped, you are home hours earlier than the drive would allow, with the evening still ahead of you.
