Mambrui Sand Dunes and Hell’s Kitchen Sunset Tour | Malindi | Half Day
Mambrui Sand Dunes and Marafa Depression (Hell's Kitchen)
From the dunes by the sea to a sunset over the canyon, in one afternoon.
North of Malindi, the sand dunes of Mambrui roll right down to the Indian Ocean. An hour inland, the ground splits open into the red and gold gullies of Marafa, which locals call Nyari, "the place broken by itself." Most visitors know it as Hell's Kitchen.
This afternoon trip joins the two in the right order. You walk the dunes while the sun is high, then reach the canyon as the heat breaks and the light turns the rock to fire. A local guide walks you down into the gorges, tells you the legend behind them, and brings you back to the rim in time for sunset.
Private transport, entry fees and your guide are all arranged, so the only plan you need is where to stand for the photo. Karibuni.

About Package
More information about this package
Most couples come to Malindi for the beach, and that's fair. Still, the afternoon that people talk about on the flight home usually happens inland, far from the sea.
The trip starts at Mambrui, a quiet Swahili village north of Malindi where white dunes meet the ocean. You have time to climb, walk barefoot and take the wide photos that make friends ask where you were. If you want a burst of speed, a quad bike ride is available on the dunes. Keep in mind the ride lasts under 15 minutes, so think of it as a short thrill rather than the main event.
From there, the road turns inland through farms, villages and acacia country to Marafa. Here the earth has worn away into gorges and tall sandstone pillars in shades of red, pink, orange and cream. The Giriama call it Nyari, "the place broken by itself." Your guide will tell you the older story, about a rich family whose pride brought the ground down beneath them.
The name Hell's Kitchen comes from the heat inside the canyon, which is why timing matters. We arrive in the late afternoon, once the worst of it has passed. Then you walk down into the gullies, climb back out, and wait at the rim as the sun drops and the whole canyon glows.
A word from our team: the sunset is the moment, so we never rush it. The drive back to Malindi is after dark, on a route our drivers know well, with cold water waiting in the car.
Planning a longer stay? Pair this afternoon with a morning on the water, such as Malindi Marine National Park or a Watamu dhow cruise. Prefer it all arranged? Our Malindi couple packages cover flights, stays and day trips together.
