Watamu is the calmest and most forgiving snorkelling water on the Kenyan coast, which makes it the easiest place in the country to try this for the first time. The reef sits inside a protected marine park, the lagoon stays sheltered most of the year, and green turtles turn up often enough that most guests see one.
You do not need to know how to swim. Everyone wears a buoyancy vest that keeps you at the surface without effort, and your guide stays in the water alongside you. Children, nervous swimmers and complete beginners all do well here.
Your guide picks the site around the tide and names what you are looking at as you go. Trips run in morning and afternoon slots.

Watamu Marine Park. The reef here sits inside one of Kenya's oldest protected marine areas. Coral gardens, parrotfish, angelfish and butterflyfish are all within a short boat ride of the beach, in water calm enough that you can usually stand if you want to.
Turtles. Watamu is the most reliable place in Kenya to see green turtles while snorkelling. Most guests see at least one. Nobody can promise it, since they are wild animals and they move.
No experience needed. Your guide fits you with a mask, snorkel, fins and a buoyancy vest, gives you a short briefing on the boat, then stays in the water with you throughout. First timers and non-swimmers are the majority of who we take out.
Transport is not included. You make your own way to the departure point in Watamu, which is a few minutes from most Watamu hotels. This keeps the price down and lets the trip slot into whatever else you have planned. If you would rather we collected you, add a transfer below.
Package Itinerary
The package itinerary is as follows
Watamu Marine Park Snorkelling — 2 Hours
Meet at the beach. You make your own way to the departure point in Watamu. We confirm the exact spot and time once your booking is in. Most Watamu hotels are a few minutes away on foot or by tuk-tuk.
Briefing and gear. Your guide fits your mask, snorkel, fins and buoyancy vest, then runs through the safety briefing. Around ten minutes.
Boat to the reef. A short ride across the lagoon to the site your guide has picked for that day's tide.
In the water. Roughly 45 to 60 minutes on the reef. Your guide stays with you and points out what you are seeing. Anyone who prefers to stay on the boat can watch from the deck.
Back to shore. Return across the lagoon. The rest of your day is your own.
