Most birthdays get spent in a restaurant somewhere in Nairobi with the same people and the same playlist. A budget birthday in Lamu is a genuinely different proposition, and not because it costs more. It is different because the island physically will not let you rush. There are no cars on Lamu. You get around on foot through the coral stone lanes, by boat across the channel, or behind a donkey, and after about half a day of that your sense of urgency quietly disappears.
You fly in from Nairobi in under two hours, cross to Lamu Town by boat, and stay inside the Old Town itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been continuously lived in since the fourteenth century. Your base is a restored sixteenth century Swahili house with an inner courtyard, seven rooms with private verandas, and a roof terrace with day beds and a swinging bed. Most of your evenings end up there.
The birthday itself gets a full day out on the water. A boat takes you through the archipelago to the reef and sandbanks off Manda Toto, where you snorkel, swim, and at low tide walk out onto a bank of exposed sand in the middle of the channel with nothing on it. A cake is arranged in advance from a Lamu Town baker and comes out on the rooftop that evening, with a table held for you at a seafront restaurant afterwards.
The other set piece is the sunset dhow sail on your second evening. Private, just the two of you and a crew, on a wooden boat with a lateen sail rigged the way they have been rigged here for centuries. Day 1: Nairobi to Lamu Old Town
Pickup from your Nairobi address at 7:30 am for the drive to the airport. The flight to Manda Airport takes a little under two hours and the approach over the archipelago is worth staying awake for. Your Baecation host meets you at the airstrip and walks you to a waiting private boat for the short crossing to Lamu Town. Bags travel the last stretch to the guesthouse by donkey. Check in, settle, and take the afternoon at your own pace. In the evening, walk the waterfront as the dhows come in and eat in the lanes, where a plate of pilau or grilled fish costs a few hundred shillings.

Day 2: Lamu Old Town, Shela Beach and the sunset dhow
Breakfast at the guesthouse, then a guided walking tour of Lamu Old Town with a local guide. The route covers Lamu Fort, the Lamu Museum, the Swahili House Museum, the carved doors, the donkey sanctuary and the market. After lunch, a short boat ride south to Shela Beach, twelve kilometres of open sand that is usually close to empty. Swim and stay as long as you like. In the late afternoon you board your private dhow for a two hour sunset sail across the channel, sail up and engine off, ending with the sun going down behind the Old Town skyline.

Day 3: Full day on the water, and the cake
An early start and a full day boat trip out into the archipelago. The route runs through the channels to the reef off Manda Toto, where you snorkel with masks and fins provided. At low tide the boat stops on an exposed sandbank in the middle of the water, which is the photograph everyone ends up using. Lunch can be arranged as a packed meal or taken back on the island. Back at the guesthouse in the late afternoon, the birthday cake comes out on the rooftop terrace at sunset, and a table is held for you at a seafront restaurant for dinner.

Day 4: Market, then home
A last breakfast on the roof with the channel in front of you, then a walk through the market for cardamom, halwa, a kikoi or a carved piece to take back. Check out, and a private boat carries you across to Manda. Your host sees you through the airstrip and you fly to Nairobi, with the transfer to your Nairobi address included.

Loose cotton clothing covering shoulders and knees for town. Lamu is a conservative Muslim community and modest dress is good manners
