Rapids Camp Sagana

Book it quietly, say nothing, and drive north on Friday with a packed bag in the boot.

A surprise falls apart on logistics. You have to book something without leaving a trail, keep a straight face for 2 weeks and then produce a plan that holds together once the secret is out. Most people give up and book a restaurant.

Sagana is the version that works. It is 2 hours north of Nairobi on tarmac, so there are no flights to book, no dates to clear with anyone and nothing that shows up on a shared calendar. You can tell them to pack for a weekend at 6pm on Friday and be at the river before dark.

Once you arrive, nothing needs managing. The room is booked, every meal from the first breakfast to the last is covered and the activities are already arranged. Kayaks on the calm stretch. The geckos on the gentle water. The plunge from the rocks and the zip line out across the river. A walk upstream to the waterfall on the first afternoon and a walk along the bank under moonlight after dinner. You are not organising anything once you get there, which is the whole point of doing the organising in advance.

Tell us what the surprise is for when you book and we will brief the camp before you arrive. Flowers in the room, a cake at dinner, a table set apart from the others. None of it announced, all of it handled.

The one thing worth knowing is that this works best when they find out at the car rather than at the camp. Two hours of not knowing where you are going is a good deal of the gift.

About Package

More information about this package

Everything is arranged before you arrive:
The room, all meals and every included activity are confirmed in advance and briefed to the camp. There is nothing to book, choose or pay for on site, so the weekend does not turn into you making arrangements while they wait.

A private room, not a tent line:
Rapids Camp keeps its rooms separate from the camping ground, with electricity and a private bathroom. You are on the same site as the river without sleeping in canvas or sharing a washblock.

Full board across all 3 days:
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered from arrival to departure, buffet style from the camp kitchen with Kenyan and Indian dishes and vegetarian options on request. Complimentary coffee runs throughout.

6 activities already inside the price:
Zip lining, the waterfall challenge, kayaking, the geckos, the plunge and a guided moonlight walk. None require experience or prior fitness, which matters when the other person has not agreed to any of it in advance.

We brief the camp on the occasion in advance:
Tell us what you are marking when you book. Flowers, a cake or a table set apart are arranged quietly rather than announced, so the moment belongs to you rather than to the staff.

Short enough notice to actually be a surprise:
2 hours from Nairobi on tarmac means you can book this without clearing dates, arranging leave or explaining a flight. Bags in the boot on Friday evening is enough.

Package Itinerary

The package itinerary is as follows

3 Days Affordable Surprise Getaway Sagana Itinerary with Baecation Adventures from Nairobi

Day 1
Morning: The drive they were not expecting:
Leave Nairobi whenever you like. Check in opens from midday, so a late morning start gives you an unhurried drive with room to stop. The turn north past Thika is usually the point where the guessing begins.

Afternoon: Arrive and let it land:
Settle into the room and eat lunch above the river. When you are ready, the waterfall challenge takes you upstream on foot to where the water comes down hard. It is a walk rather than a climb and runs about an hour with a guide.

Evening: A walk under the moon:
Dinner at camp as the light goes, then the guided moonlight walk along the riverbank. The water is louder in the dark than you expect. If you have arranged flowers or a cake, this is the evening they appear.

Day 2

Morning: On the water together:
After breakfast the kayaks go out on the calm stretch. Flat water rather than rapids, so no experience is needed and you can drift as much as you paddle. The geckos follow on the gentle sections.

Afternoon: The plunge and the line:
The plunge sends you off the rocks into a deep pool of the river, twice if you want it. Then the zip line, out across the water and back, in full harness and helmet. Neither is dangerous and both produce the photographs.

Evening: The long dinner:
Nothing scheduled. Dinner runs late, the fire is lit and the sky over Sagana is clear on most dry season nights. This is the evening for the candlelit table at William Island if you have added it.

Day 3

Morning: A slow one:
Breakfast on the deck with no start time. The river is at its best early, with mist still lifting and the camp quiet. The morning is unscheduled on purpose.

Afternoon: Home the easy way:
A final lunch, then check out. The drive puts you back in Nairobi by late afternoon, which leaves the whole evening at home before the week starts.

Evening: Back in Nairobi:
Home, with the surprise having lasted 3 days rather than 1 dinner.
