Surprising someone with a trip is not difficult to imagine and is very difficult to execute. The trip itself is easy. What ruins it is a confirmation email at seven in the morning, a calendar invite that syncs across devices, or a call from a hotel checking a dietary requirement. Every one of those has happened to somebody.
So we run this one differently. One consultant, one number, one email address that you nominate, and nothing automated going out to anybody else. The property is briefed before you travel. No booking reference reaches your partner's phone, and if a question comes up we bring it to you rather than to whoever answers first.
The trip underneath is a short flight from JKIA to Malindi and two nights at African House Resort, a small colonial villa off Casuarina Road with seven rooms, a pool in a tropical garden and a kitchen that cooks to order. On the second evening there is a table set for the two of you away from the restaurant, which is the one thing we plan for you. Everything else is deliberately empty, because the point of a surprise is that nothing has been demanded of the person receiving it.

Return flights from Nairobi: JKIA to Malindi Airport, nonstop and a little over an hour, with the airport only ten minutes from the hotel gate at the Malindi end.
Booking handled on your terms: You nominate the number and email we use. Confirmations, the itinerary and any question that comes up go only there, and nothing is sent to the traveller you are surprising.
The property briefed in advance: African House Resort is told before you arrive that this is a surprise, so nobody greets your partner by name with a rehearsed welcome or asks about the occasion at check in.
A seven room villa rather than a resort: It holds fewer than twenty guests when full, so the pool is usually quiet and arrival is low key rather than a lobby production. Guests consistently rate it among the strongest stays in Malindi.
Rooms built for two: Each room is individually decorated and air conditioned, with a four poster bed, a large bathroom and a private veranda looking over the garden. Afternoon tea, coffee and pastries are laid out daily.
A private dinner on the second night: A table set for the two of you, away from the other guests, arranged by us rather than by either of you once the secret is out.

Day 1: The Reveal, and Then the Coast.
Morning: Your pickup is arranged for JKIA. How much your partner knows by this point is up to you. Some people hand over a packed bag at the door, some say nothing until the departure board. Either way the flight lifts off and a little over an hour later you land at Malindi Airport, where a driver is waiting for the ten minute run to Casuarina Road.
Afternoon: Check in and take the first swim. The pool sits in the middle of the garden with loungers under the palms, and lunch can be ordered at the bar rather than sat down for properly. Nothing is scheduled, which is the correct way to spend the first afternoon of a trip you did not know you were taking.
Evening: Dinner at the resort, cooked to order and served whenever you are ready. The beach is 300 metres away if you feel like walking before the light goes.
Day 2: The Day That Is Now Just a Holiday.
Morning: Breakfast is a la carte and unhurried. Ask at reception for the week's tide table, because these bays change completely between high and low water. A low tide falling mid morning gives you sandbanks you can walk out to and the best light of the day.
Afternoon: Take it as it comes. Stay by the pool, snorkel inside the marine park, or go twenty minutes inland to Gede Ruins, a Swahili town abandoned centuries ago and now standing in forest. The Kipepeo Butterfly Project sits beside it and takes an easy hour.
Evening: Your table is set away from the restaurant, just the two of you, for the dinner we arranged before you left Nairobi. Nothing to choose, nothing to settle at the end of it.
Day 3: One Last Morning.
Morning: Sleep in properly. Breakfast runs late, the pool is at its best before the heat arrives, and checkout is not something to rush toward.
Afternoon: Your transfer collects you for the short run to Malindi Airport and the flight back to Nairobi, landing you home the same day.
