Why Naivasha Works So Well for a School Trip.
Naivasha sits about 90 kilometres and roughly two hours from Nairobi along the highway, which makes it one of the few genuine “there and back in a day” destinations that doesn’t eat into your school calendar or your budget with an overnight stay.
It also happens to line up neatly with what lower primary pupils are already learning. Hell’s Gate’s gorges and towers are a live geography lesson on volcanic rock formation. The lake introduces them to wetland ecosystems, hippos, and over 400 recorded bird species. And Olkaria’s geothermal spa is a rare chance to see, and feel, how Kenya generates clean energy from the ground itself.

Lake Naivasha boat ride.
A guided water safari on the lake to view hippos, fish eagles, pelicans, and other waterbirds from a safe distance. Boats seat 7 passengers, so larger classes will need multiple boats running one after another or side by side.
Hell’s Gate National Park.
One of the only parks in Kenya where visitors walk and cycle freely among wildlife, since it has no resident predators. Pupils explore the dramatic gorges, spot zebra, giraffe, and antelope, and see Fischer’s Tower, the volcanic spire made famous by the Lion King.
Olkaria Geothermal Spa.
A short distance further into the park, KenGen runs a natural, mineral-rich hot spring pool fed by the same geothermal activity that powers a good share of Kenya’s electricity grid. It’s the part of the day the pupils remember longest, and it doubles as a hands-on introduction to clean energy.

A couple of things worth knowing before you budget:
- These rates cover entry and activity fees per pupil. Transport is not included, since most schools already have a preferred bus and driver for trips like this. - KWS entry fees are set by the government and reviewed periodically, so we recommend confirming the exact figure with us close to your travel date.
- If your school wants to add Mount Longonot to the day, it falls in the same KWS fee category as Hell’s Gate, but it needs its own gate ticket and adds real time to the day. Given how much is already packed into a single day, we usually recommend it as a separate trip rather than bolting it onto this one. Talk to us if you’d like it costed in.

Standard vs Deluxe Lunch: Which Should You Choose?
Most budget schools go with the Standard lunch (Option A) because it keeps the per-student cost as low as possible while still giving pupils a full, balanced meal. Schools with a bit more room in the budget, or those doing this as an end-of-term treat, often upgrade to the Deluxe option for the second protein and a soda.
Either way, let us know of any dietary restrictions or allergies among your pupils at least a week before the trip so the caterer can plan for them.
Getting to Naivasha.
Naivasha is about a 2-hour drive from Nairobi along a well-maintained highway, which is manageable for even young pupils without an overnight stop.
Most schools use their own bus for the trip; our familiar yellow school buses are a common sight on this route on weekday mornings during school term. Common Mistakes Schools Make When Planning a Naivasha Trip.
- Not booking boats early enough. Each boat only seats 7, so a class of 40 pupils needs several boats running back to back. Confirm your numbers with us at least two weeks out so we can reserve enough boats for your slot.
- Travelling without an official letter from the school. Carry a letter on school letterhead, signed by the head teacher, confirming the trip and pupil numbers. Most attractions expect this to apply the student rate.
- Confirming lunch numbers too late. The caterer needs a final headcount and any dietary notes at least a week ahead, not on the morning of the trip.
- Understaffing the water activities. The boat ride and the spa pool both need close supervision. We recommend at least one adult for every 10 to 15 lower primary pupils around water, more than you’d use for the walking sections at Hell’s Gate.
- Cutting the departure time too close. Nairobi’s morning traffic can add 30 to 45 minutes to the drive out. Leaving by 6:00 to 6:30 AM protects your whole schedule, including the spa, which is best enjoyed before the afternoon crowds arrive.
