Affordable Anniversary Mombasa SGR | 3 Days 2 Nights

Couple Packages
Honeymoons

Mombasa Beach Hotel or similar

Two nights on the North Coast, no driving, and a last day that belongs to the two of you.

An Affordable Anniversary Mombasa SGR package for couples who would rather spend the money on the days than on getting there.

Anniversaries are easy to let slide. The year gets busy, the date arrives on a Tuesday, and you end up marking it with a dinner you booked that afternoon. This is the alternative, and it is short enough to take without negotiating leave.

You board at eight and the coast does the rest. By early afternoon you are checking into a room facing the Indian Ocean, and the only thing on the schedule is dinner. Day two has nothing in it at all, which is the point. Breakfast and dinner are covered so neither of you is doing mental arithmetic over a menu, and lunch stays open so a long morning on the sand can run as long as it wants.

On day three the room goes back at ten and a car and driver take over. Bags in the boot, Old Town or Haller Park or a slow lunch on the creek, entirely as you feel on the morning. You are at the terminus for the afternoon train and home in Nairobi the same evening.

Two nights, no car hire, no airport, and one full day where nobody needs anything from either of you.

About Package

More information about this package

Every room faces the sea: Mombasa Beach Hotel has 152 rooms and all of them have a private balcony looking over the Indian Ocean. There is no bad allocation here, which removes the one thing most likely to sour a short stay.

Somewhere different to eat each night: two restaurants and a café on site, plus the Cavern Beach Bistro built into the rock at the water's edge. On a two night stay that is the difference between dining and eating in the same room twice.

Gardens that have had time to grow: the grounds are mature tropical planting rather than new landscaping, so there is real shade by mid afternoon and somewhere to sit when the sun is at its heaviest.

Suites if you want to mark the year properly: alongside the standard rooms there are six executive and deluxe suites, which is the natural upgrade for a milestone anniversary rather than an ordinary one.

Close to town without being in it: roughly 7 km from the Mombasa CBD and 1.6 km from City Mall and Nyali Centre, so Fort Jesus, Old Town and Haller Park are short runs on your last day. It is also the nearest North Coast property to Miritini, which keeps the transfers brief at both ends.

Part of Kenya Safari Lodges and Hotels: the same group operates Voi and Ngulia Safari Lodges in Tsavo, so a couple of bush nights can be added on the way home if you want to stretch the trip.

Package Itinerary

The package itinerary is as follows

Affordable Anniversary Mombasa SGR Itinerary with Baecation Adventures from Nairobi

Day One: Out of Nairobi by breakfast

Morning. Boarding at Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau for the eight o'clock departure. The link train from Nairobi Central leaves at 6:40am if you are coming through town. Once you are seated the trip is genuinely yours. Tsavo comes up mid morning and the game is close enough to the line to point at.

Afternoon. Into Miritini early afternoon. Your driver meets you on the platform rather than somewhere in the car park, because the arrivals hall is chaotic and there is no sense starting a short trip in an argument. Through Changamwe and over Nyali Bridge to the hotel.

Evening. Dinner at the hotel and the beach afterwards. Nyali sand holds the heat of the day long after dark, which makes for a barefoot walk nobody wants to cut short.

Day Two: The day you came for

Morning. Breakfast whenever you get to it. The tide pulls a long way out in the morning and the flats in front of the hotel are the best walking on this stretch of coast.

Afternoon. The pool, the gardens or the spa. If you want the water, the Marine Park reef is a short boat ride straight off the beach and can be arranged the same morning.

Evening. Dinner, then the terrace. This is also the natural slot for the Tamarind dhow if you have added it, with pickup from the hotel and dinner cooked on deck as the boat passes Fort Jesus lit against the water.

Day Three: Checkout is not the end of the day

Morning. Breakfast, then the room goes back at ten. Your bags go into the car rather than a luggage store, and the driver stays with you until the train.

Afternoon. The car is yours. Fort Jesus and the carved doors of Old Town, or Haller Park and the giraffe feeding platform, or a long lunch somewhere and nothing else. You decide on the morning. The driver has you at Miritini in good time for the three o'clock departure.

Evening. The coast slides away behind you and Nairobi Terminus comes up at around twenty past eight.

What To Carry

The original ID used to book your train tickets. Not a copy and not a photo. Kenya Railways tickets are tied to the named passenger and you will not be allowed to board without the document you booked with
Light cotton clothing. The coast is humid year round and nothing heavy gets worn
Something smarter for the two dinners, particularly if you are taking the dhow
Swimwear and a cover up
Something modest for Old Town. It is a residential Muslim neighbourhood and covered shoulders and knees are the respectful minimum
Reef safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
Insect repellent for the evenings
A power bank for the train
Cash for gate fees and tuk tuks
