Train tracks, red elephants and one promise for the year ahead

Our Affordable Anniversary Tsavo SGR Safari takes you by train to Voi and into Tsavo East for two nights of red elephants, slow evenings and one promise for the year ahead.

You leave the city behind in a First Class seat on the Madaraka Express and step off at Voi just after noon, where your driver guide is waiting with a private safari van. If you are coming from Mombasa, the same van collects you at your hotel and brings you up the highway instead. Within the hour you are through Voi Gate and driving into Tsavo East, the red dust already on the tyres.

Home for two nights is Sentrim Tsavo, a camp of canvas tents set inside the park, so the wildlife starts where the driveway ends. Elephants come to drink at a waterhole you can see from the dining area, there is a pool with its own bar for the hot middle of the day, and the evenings end around a bonfire. Tsavo East holds four of the Big Five, with elephants and buffalo seen most days, lions often and leopards on lucky drives. There are no rhinos on this side of the park.

The heart of the trip is the second afternoon. Your guide takes you up Mudanda Rock, a long rock outcrop that local communities once used as a lookout, and at the top you each say out loud one promise for the year ahead. That night, a table facing the waterhole is set for two with an anniversary cake waiting.

About Package

More information about this package

Inside Tsavo East: Sentrim Tsavo sits inside the park, about 40 minutes through the bush from Voi Gate. There is no gate to queue at each morning, so your drives begin the moment you leave camp.

A tent with a balcony: The camp has 21 canvas tents and 5 stone walled rooms, each with a king size bed under a mosquito net and a large balcony facing the bush. It feels like the pioneer camps of old, with hot showers and tea and coffee in the tent.

Dinner beside the waterhole: Elephants walk in to drink at a waterhole in view of the dining tables, so dinner often comes with company. Your anniversary cake is served here on the second night.

Pool, bars and bonfire: Kiu Bar stands beside the outdoor pool for the hot hours, and Chui Bar sits indoors for the evening. After dark, guests gather around a bonfire under a sky with very little light pollution.

By train, or from your door: Nairobi couples ride the 8:00am Madaraka Express in First Class and reach Voi at 12:02pm. Mombasa couples are collected at their hotel by the same private van that stays with you for the whole trip.

A promise on Mudanda Rock: Your guide leads you to the top of this long rock lookout in Tsavo East for the one moment the trip is built around. Each of you says one promise for the coming year, out loud, with nothing but plains in every direction.

Package Itinerary

The package itinerary is as follows

Affordable Anniversary Tsavo SGR Safari Itinerary with Baecation Adventures from Nairobi or Mombasa

Day 1

Morning, Your Safari Begins: Nairobi couples board the 8:00am Madaraka Express in First Class at Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau and watch the country dry out and redden past Mtito Andei. Mombasa couples are collected at their hotel early in the morning and ride up the highway in the van that will be yours for the trip.

Afternoon, Into the Red: Nairobi couples arrive at Voi at 12:02pm, where your driver guide is waiting. You enter Tsavo East through Voi Gate and game drive slowly to Sentrim Tsavo, arriving in time for a late lunch and a first look at your tent.

Evening, The Waterhole Hour: A short evening drive as the heat breaks, then back to camp before dark. Dinner is served within sight of the waterhole, and the night closes around the bonfire.

Day 2

Morning, Early Plains: An early drive while the air is cool and the predators are still moving. Your guide follows the elephant paths across the plains before you return to camp for breakfast.

Afternoon, The Promise at Mudanda Rock: After lunch and a slow hour by the pool, you drive out to Mudanda Rock. Your guide walks you to the top, where you each say one promise for the year ahead, then you drive back through the evening light.

Evening, A Table for Two: Your table faces the waterhole tonight, and an anniversary cake arrives with dessert. Stay up by the fire as long as you like, since tomorrow starts gently.

Day 3

Morning, One Last Drive: A final dawn drive for the animals you have not yet seen, then breakfast and check out by 10:00am.

Afternoon, Back Through Tsavo: You drive back towards Voi with a packed lunch, game viewing along the way. Mombasa couples continue down the highway in the van and reach the coast by evening.

Evening, The Evening Train: Nairobi couples board the 4:38pm Madaraka Express at Voi in First Class and arrive at Nairobi Terminus at 8:18pm, with the whole trip still settling in.
