The birthday problem is always the same. A group chat, a venue that can seat everyone, a bill split badly, and by ten o'clock you are home. It is fine. It is also exactly what happened last year.
This is three days instead of three hours. You leave Nairobi at eight on the birthday eve or the morning itself, and the train puts you on the coast by early afternoon. Nobody is driving, nobody is navigating, and the day starts properly rather than after a long road.
Day two is the birthday and there is nothing in it. Breakfast when you wake, the beach in front of the hotel, the pool when the sun gets serious, dinner already covered. Add a boat, a spa hour or a photographer if you want the day marked. Leave it empty if what you actually want is a day where nobody needs anything from you.
Day three the room goes back at ten, but a car and driver are yours until the train. Old Town, Haller Park, a long lunch, or none of it. You are back in Nairobi that evening.
Birthday packages in Mombasa are usually built around a group and a minibus. This is a birthday getaway for two people who would rather not organise anything.

Every room faces the sea: Mombasa Beach Hotel has 152 rooms and all of them open onto a private balcony over the Indian Ocean. Waking up to that on the actual morning does more for a birthday than any amount of decoration.
Somewhere to be all day without leaving: an outdoor pool, a children's pool, mature tropical gardens, two restaurants, a café and a beauty salon and spa on site. On a birthday where the plan is deliberately nothing, the property has to be able to absorb a whole day. This one can.
The Cavern Beach Bistro: built into the coral rock at the water's edge, which makes it the obvious place for a birthday lunch or a drink at the end of the afternoon without booking anything.
The reef is directly offshore: Mombasa Marine National Park sits in front of the hotel, so a snorkelling trip or a glass bottom boat is a short ride from the beach rather than a half day expedition.
Fifteen minutes from the city, ninety seconds from the water: roughly 7 km from the Mombasa CBD and 1.6 km from City Mall and Nyali Centre. Close enough that day three can cover Fort Jesus, Old Town or Haller Park without rushing.
Part of Kenya Safari Lodges and Hotels: the group also runs Voi and Ngulia Safari Lodges in Tsavo, so bush nights can be added on the way home if the birthday is worth stretching.

Day One: Nairobi to the North Coast
Boarding at Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau for the eight o'clock departure, with the link train from Nairobi Central at 6:40am if you are coming through town. The line runs through Tsavo mid morning with game close enough to the track to point out, and you reach Miritini in the early afternoon.
Your driver meets you on the platform rather than in the car park, so there is no negotiating with touts on arrival. The road runs through Changamwe and over Nyali Bridge to the hotel, where you check in and get the rest of the afternoon on the beach or at the pool.
Dinner is at the hotel. The sand at Nyali holds the day's heat well after dark, which makes for a long walk afterwards if you want one.
Day Two: The birthday, unscheduled
Nothing is planned and that is deliberate. Breakfast runs late if you want it late. The tide pulls a long way out in the morning and the flats in front of the hotel are the best walking on this stretch of coast.
Through the middle of the day the pool and the gardens do the work, with the spa on site if either of you wants an hour out of the sun. The Marine Park reef is directly offshore, so a snorkelling trip or the glass bottom boat can be arranged the same morning rather than booked weeks ahead.
Dinner is covered again. If you want the day marked properly, the Tamarind dhow sails in the evening with pickup from the hotel, dinner cooked on deck and Fort Jesus lit up as you pass it.
Day Three: Checkout, then the city
Breakfast, then the room goes back at ten. Your bags go into the car rather than a luggage store and the driver stays with you for the rest of the day.
The car is yours until the train. Fort Jesus and the carved doors of Old Town, or Haller Park and the giraffe feeding platform, or a slow lunch somewhere on the creek and nothing more. You decide on the morning rather than in advance.
The driver has you at Miritini in good time for the three o'clock departure, and Nairobi Terminus comes up at around twenty past eight.
