Affordable Birthday Sagana | 3 Days 2 Nights
Rapids Camp Sagana, room on full board, or similar
3 days on the river, a zip line across the water, and a birthday that does not involve a restaurant booking.
There is a version of a birthday that involves a table for 2, a set menu and a bill that arrives too soon. This is the other version.
Sagana is 2 hours north of Nairobi on tarmac, which means a birthday weekend here starts on Friday evening rather than Saturday afternoon. No flights, no airport, no long transfer at the far end. Just the drive up through Thika and then the sound of the river.
The 3 days are built around water and height. A zip line running out across the gorge and back. A plunge from the rocks into a deep pool. Kayaks on the calm stretch and the geckos on the gentle water, which is where most of the shouting happens. A walk upstream to the waterfall on the first afternoon and a walk along the bank under moonlight after dinner.
Everything is handled. Every meal from the first breakfast to the last, all the safety kit, all the guiding. What is not included is the adrenaline you might want on top. The full rapids, the bungee, rock climbing and archery sit alongside the package so you take what suits and pay for nothing you skip.
It works whether the birthday belongs to the one who wants to jump off things or the one who would rather watch from the bank with a cold drink. Sagana has room for both, and the price leaves enough over for the cake.

About Package
More information about this package
A private room, not a tent line
Rapids Camp keeps its rooms separate from the camping ground, with electricity and a private bathroom. You are on the same site as the river and the activities without sleeping in canvas or sharing a washblock.
Full board across all 3 days
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered from arrival to departure, served buffet style from the camp kitchen with Kenyan and Indian dishes and vegetarian options on request. Complimentary coffee runs throughout the stay.
Zip lining across the river is included
The zip line runs out over the water and back rather than through forest, which is a different thing entirely from the canopy lines elsewhere in Kenya. It is included in the price rather than sold to you at the desk.
6 activities already inside the price
Zip lining, the waterfall challenge, kayaking, the geckos, the plunge and the moonlight walk are all covered. None of them require prior experience and all of them come with guides and full safety kit.
2 hours from Nairobi on tarmac
The Nairobi Nyeri road gets you there in roughly 2 hours in normal traffic, so a birthday weekend does not cost you a day of travel at each end.
The bigger stuff is available without being compulsory
Full white water rafting and bungee jumping can be added for one or both of you. If the birthday person wants the bungee and the other does not, nobody has paid for it twice.
Package Itinerary
The package itinerary is as follows
3 Days Affordable Birthday Sagana Itinerary with Baecation Adventures from Nairobi
Day 1: Nairobi to Sagana
Leave Nairobi mid morning for an unhurried drive north along the Nairobi Nyeri road. The journey takes roughly 2 hours in normal traffic and passes through Thika and the pineapple country beyond it.
Check in at Rapids Camp opens from midday. Settle into the room, then lunch overlooking the river.
In the afternoon, the waterfall challenge takes you upstream on foot to where the water comes down hard. It is a walk rather than a climb and runs about an hour, with a guide throughout.
Dinner is served at camp as the light goes. Afterwards the moonlight walk follows the riverbank in the dark, guided, with the water audible the whole way.
Overnight: Rapids Camp Sagana, room on full board
Day 2: The full river day
Breakfast at camp, then straight onto the water. The kayaks go out on the calm stretch first, which needs no experience from either of you. The geckos follow, small inflatables on the gentle sections.
Lunch at camp.
The afternoon is the loud half. The plunge sends you off the rocks into a deep pool of the river, twice if you want it. Then the zip line, out across the water and back, with full harness and helmet.
This is the day to add the full rafting run or the bungee if either of you wants it. Both need booking in advance rather than deciding on the morning, so tell us when you book.
Dinner runs late. The fire is lit and the sky over Sagana is clear on most dry season nights. If you have ordered a cake, this is when it comes out.
Overnight: Rapids Camp Sagana, room on full board
Day 3: Sagana to Nairobi
A slow breakfast on the deck. The river is at its best early, with birds working the far bank and the camp still quiet.
The morning is unscheduled. Swim, sit, or walk the bank at your own pace.
Check out follows a drive back puts you in Nairobi by late afternoon, which leaves the evening free before the week starts again.
