Our Affordable Birthday Tsavo SGR Safari turns a birthday into three days of red elephants, river rapids and one very good breakfast in the middle of Tsavo East.
Long Description:
The celebration starts before the safari does. Nairobi couples ride the Madaraka Express in First Class to Voi, and when the train pulls in, your driver guide is on the platform holding a sign with the birthday person's name on it. Coming from Mombasa? The same sign is waiting at your hotel door, along with the private safari van that stays with you for the whole trip.
You spend two nights at Sentrim Tsavo, a tented camp inside Tsavo East where elephants come to drink at a waterhole within sight of the dining area. Afternoons are for the pool and Kiu Bar, evenings for the bonfire. On game drives you can expect elephants and buffalo most days and lions often, while leopards take luck. Tsavo East holds four of the Big Five, and rhinos are not among them.
The birthday itself belongs to the Galana River. On the second morning you leave camp early with breakfast packed and drive north to Lugard Falls, where the river pushes through a narrow run of rock rapids. You eat with the sound of the water below you, and that evening a birthday cake comes to your table beside the waterhole.

Tsavo East from the doorstep: Sentrim Tsavo stands inside the park, roughly 40 minutes of bush driving from Voi Gate. Every game drive starts straight from camp, with no morning queue at a park gate.
Canvas and stone: Choose from 21 safari tents and 5 stone walled rooms, all with a king size bed draped in a mosquito net. Each has a wide balcony looking out at the bush, plus a hot shower and tea and coffee things inside.
Elephants at dinner: The dining area overlooks a waterhole where elephants often come in to drink after dark. Your birthday cake is brought to your table here on the second evening.
Two bars and a fire: Kiu Bar sits by the outdoor pool for the lazy middle of the day, while Chui Bar is the indoor spot for evenings. The day ends at the bonfire, with Tsavo's wide night sky overhead.
A birthday welcome at Voi: Nairobi couples arrive at Voi on the 8:00am First Class train at 12:02pm and find their guide holding a birthday sign on the platform. Mombasa couples get the same welcome at their hotel door when the van arrives.
Breakfast at Lugard Falls: Lugard Falls is a stretch of white water where the Galana River squeezes between rocks, named after the colonial administrator Frederick Lugard. Your birthday breakfast is eaten here, with crocodile and hippo country just downstream.

Day 1
Morning, Your Birthday Trip Begins: Nairobi couples take the 8:00am Madaraka Express in First Class from Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau, with the landscape turning red somewhere past Mtito Andei. Mombasa couples are collected at their hotel in the early morning by the van that will be theirs for all three days.
Afternoon, A Sign at the Platform: The train reaches Voi at 12:02pm, and your guide is waiting with the birthday person's name held high. You drive in through Voi Gate and game drive on to Sentrim Tsavo for a late lunch.
Evening, First Night in the Park: A gentle drive in the last warm light, then back to camp before dark. Dinner looks out over the waterhole, and the evening winds down by the bonfire.
Day 2
Morning, Birthday Breakfast at Lugard Falls: You leave camp early with breakfast boxes and drive north towards the Galana River, game viewing on the way. At Lugard Falls you walk over the rocks above the rapids, then sit down to breakfast with the river roaring below.
Afternoon, A Slow Afternoon: You wind back across the plains to camp for a late lunch. The rest of the afternoon is yours for the pool, a nap in the tent or a drink at Kiu Bar.
Evening, Cake by the Waterhole: Tonight a birthday cake arrives at your table beside the waterhole, candle lit. Linger by the fire afterwards, since there is no rush in the morning.
Day 3
Morning, Dawn in Tsavo: One more early drive to catch the plains waking up, then breakfast and check out by 10:00am.
Afternoon, The Road Back to Voi: You game drive slowly back towards Voi with a packed lunch. Mombasa couples keep going down the highway in the van and are home on the coast by evening.
Evening, Homeward by Train: Nairobi couples board the 4:38pm Madaraka Express at Voi in First Class, reaching Nairobi Terminus at 8:18pm with a year's worth of birthday stories.
