Our Affordable Vacation Samburu Safari is a proper break for two in Kenya's wild north, with three days of private game drives, a small lodge on the Ewaso Nyiro and a welcome waiting when you arrive.
If you have already done the Mara or Naivasha, Samburu is where Kenya starts to surprise you again. The country north of Mount Kenya is dry, open and huge, cut through by the Ewaso Nyiro River and watched over by the flat topped mountain of Ololokwe. The wildlife is different too: the Samburu Special Five, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, live here alongside elephants, lions and leopards.
This is a vacation in the full sense. You take the leave, we take care of the rest. A private van and driver guide collect you in Nairobi, the road runs five to six hours north past Nanyuki and Isiolo, and a fruit platter and welcome card are waiting in your room when you arrive.
From there the days follow the rhythm of the reserve: out early when the animals are moving, back to the pool when the sun is high, and out again as the light turns gold over the river. Three days, two nights and no emails, which is the kind of vacation that actually leaves you rested.

Your Base: Samburu Elephant Lodge is a small, privately owned lodge on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro, with only a handful of villas and cottages. It is run by people from the surrounding Samburu community, and the hospitality feels personal because it is.
Welcome Waiting: A fruit platter and a welcome card are set in your room for your arrival, a small sign that the holiday has properly started.
Pool Above the River: The pool faces out over the river country and is the natural place to spend the hottest hours between drives.
Elephants Nearby: Herds come to the river close to the lodge and are often seen from the grounds, especially during the dry season.
Full Board: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included, with fresh, simple meals and more than one place to sit with a view.
Private Safari Van: Your own tour van with a pop up roof and your own driver guide, so the whole trip runs at your pace.
A Different Kenya: The Samburu Special Five, the Ewaso Nyiro and the dry northern landscape make this feel like a new country, even if you have been on safari before.

Day 1: Into the North
Morning: On the Road
We collect you from your home or hotel in Nairobi at 6am. The drive heads through Central Kenya, past the flanks of Mount Kenya, with a stop at the Equator in Nanyuki along the way.
Afternoon: A New Landscape
After Isiolo the scenery changes completely, from farmland to dry red plains with Ololokwe rising on the horizon. At the lodge a fruit platter and welcome card are waiting in your room. After lunch and a rest, your first game drive heads into the reserve.
Evening: Settling In
Dinner at the lodge, then an early night ahead of the full day tomorrow.
Day 2: The Full Samburu Day
Morning: The Plains at Sunrise
Out at first light to the open plains, where Grevy's zebra, oryx and Somali ostrich feed in the cool, and where lions and cheetahs are most active.
Afternoon: Pool and River
Back for lunch and the pool while the sun is at its strongest. Later in the afternoon, the drive follows the Ewaso Nyiro, where elephants come down to drink, gerenuk browse in the riverside thorn bushes and crocodiles lie on the sandbanks.
Evening: Dinner by the River
Dinner at the lodge after the longest and best day of the trip.
Day 3: Heading Home
Morning: A Last Morning Drive
One more short game drive for anything still on your list, then breakfast and checkout.
Afternoon: The Road Back
The return follows the same road south past Isiolo, Nanyuki and Mount Kenya, with a stop for lunch at your own cost.
Evening: Back in Nairobi
We drop you at your home or hotel in the early evening, with a camera full of animals most of your friends have never seen.
