Affordable Weekend Getaway Sagana | 3 Days 2 Nights

Rapids Camp Sagana tent or similar

3 days on the river with full board and the rapids included, for less than most couples spend on a weekend in Nairobi.

The cheapest thing about a Sagana weekend is not the price. It is the distance.

At 100 km from Nairobi on tarmac, this is roughly 2 hours of driving. No flight, no airport, no transfer at the far end. Nothing that turns a 2 night trip into a 4 day commitment. You leave the city on Friday evening and you are back on Sunday afternoon with a whole evening left over.

What you get for the money is the part people underestimate. The full white water rafting run on the Tana is included in this package rather than sold on top, which is unusual at this price and is the reason to pick this one over the gentler options. 3 hours on Class 3 and 4 water with a guide, safety kayakers and lunch on the bank afterwards. Beginners run it every weekend. The grading means you are matched to water you can handle rather than dropped into somebody else's idea of fun.

Around it sits everything else. A walk upstream to the waterfall. Kayaks on the calm stretch. The plunge from the rocks into the deep pool. The glides down the natural rock chute. A guided walk along the bank at first light and another under moonlight after dinner. Every meal from the first breakfast to the last, plus coffee all day.

You sleep in a furnished riverside tent with a proper bed rather than a sleeping mat. That is the trade that makes the price work, and on a warm Sagana night with the river 40 metres away it is not much of a trade at all.

About Package

More information about this package

The full rafting run is included, not an add on:
3 hours on the river with a guide, safety kayakers, full kit and lunch afterwards. Most packages at this price sell rafting separately at around Ksh 9,000 per person. Here it is inside the price.

A furnished tent with a real bed:
Rapids Camp tents come with beds and bedding rather than a groundsheet, set among the trees near the river. This is the single choice that brings the price down, and it is why this package costs less than the room based options.

Full board across all 3 days:
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered from arrival to departure, buffet style from the camp kitchen with Kenyan and Indian dishes and vegetarian options on request. Complimentary coffee runs throughout.

7 activities inside the price:
Rafting, the waterfall challenge, a sunrise walk, a moonlight walk, kayaking, the plunge and the water glides. None of them charged at the desk, none of them optional extras dressed up as inclusions.

2 hours from Nairobi on tarmac:
The Nairobi Nyeri road gets you there in roughly 2 hours in normal traffic, so a 2 night weekend does not cost you a travel day at each end. That is the entire argument for Sagana over the coast on a short break.

Room upgrade available if the tent is not for you:
The same package in a private room with electricity and a private bathroom costs more, and we will quote it on request. Everything else stays identical.

Package Itinerary

The package itinerary is as follows

3 Days Affordable Weekend Getaway Sagana Itinerary with Baecation Adventures from Nairobi
Day 1: Nairobi to Sagana

Leave Nairobi mid morning for the drive north along the Nairobi Nyeri road, roughly 2 hours in normal traffic, through Thika and the pineapple country beyond it.

Check in at Rapids Camp opens from midday. Settle into the tent and take lunch overlooking the river.

The afternoon starts with the waterfall challenge, a guided walk upstream to where the water comes down hard. It runs about an hour and is a walk rather than a climb.

Dinner is served at camp as the light drops. Afterwards the moonlight walk follows the riverbank in the dark, guided throughout, with the water audible the whole way.

Overnight: Rapids Camp Sagana, furnished tent on full board

Day 2: The rafting day

The sunrise walk goes out before breakfast, along the bank while the mist is still sitting on the water and the camp has not woken up. Coffee is waiting when you get back.

After breakfast, the main event. The full rafting run takes about 3 hours on Class 3 and 4 water with a guide in the boat and safety kayakers on the river. You are briefed on the bank first and matched to a section that suits your experience. Lunch follows on the riverbank.

The afternoon is quieter by design. The plunge sends you off the rocks into a deep pool, twice if you want it, and the water glides run down the natural rock chute into the river.

Dinner runs late, the fire is lit and the sky over Sagana is clear on most dry season nights.

Overnight: Rapids Camp Sagana, furnished tent on full board

Day 3: Sagana to Nairobi

Breakfast on the deck without a start time, then the kayaks on the calm stretch. Flat water rather than rapids, so you can drift as much as you paddle.

Lunch at camp, then check out.
The drive back puts you in Nairobi by late afternoon, which leaves the evening free before the week starts again.
