Surprising someone with a trip is a logistics problem before it is a romantic one. You have to book it without a confirmation email landing on a shared inbox. You have to get four days cleared without asking why. You have to pack a bag for another adult without them finding it. And on a domestic flight in Kenya you need their ID, which means quietly removing something from their wallet and putting it back. None of that is difficult, but all of it goes wrong if nobody has thought about it in advance.
That is most of what this package actually is. We book everything in your name, correspond through one contact you nominate, and send you a packing list a week ahead written specifically for someone doing it in secret. What you handle is the cover story. What we handle is everything that could give it away.
Lamu is the right destination for this because the reveal keeps going. They find out at the check in desk that they are flying to the coast. They find out an hour and a half later, when the plane comes down over the archipelago, that the coast in question is an island. They find out at the airstrip that the only way to reach it is by boat. And they find out when they get to the guesthouse that their room has been decorated and that the whole thing was arranged weeks ago. Nobody gets over that in one go.
From there it becomes a proper four day trip. There are no cars on Lamu, so you walk the coral stone lanes of a UNESCO Old Town that has been lived in since the fourteenth century, take a boat down to Shela Beach, and sail out on a private dhow at sunset. On your third evening there is one more thing they do not know about, which is a private dinner set for two on the rooftop of the guesthouse. Return flights and all boat transfers are included.

We book everything in your name only. No confirmation emails, no SMS and no calls go to your partner at any stage. All correspondence runs through one contact you nominate.
A packing list written for someone doing it in secret. Sent to you a week ahead, covering what they will need on the island and what you will have to get out of the house without them noticing.
The reveal happens at the check in desk. You get them to the airport on your cover story and they learn where they are going when the agent says it out loud. This is the version that works best and it costs nothing extra.
The room is decorated before you land. Bed and room decoration is arranged at the guesthouse ahead of arrival, so the second reveal is waiting for them when they open the door.
A private rooftop dinner they do not know about either. Set for two on the terrace of the guesthouse on your third evening, arranged in advance, with the mangrove channel below and the Old Town going quiet.
An island that does most of the work. Lamu has no cars and no roads. Arriving somewhere you have to reach by boat is a strong enough surprise on its own without anything being staged.

Day 1 — The reveal
Morning: Whatever you told them. We collect you at 7:30 am from your Nairobi address. Most people use a family visit, a work errand or a friend's event as the cover, and our driver is briefed to play along and not mention the destination. The reveal happens at the check in desk when the agent says Lamu out loud, and it is worth having your phone recording before you join the queue.
Afternoon: Two more reveals they did not see coming. The flight takes a little under two hours, and the descent over the archipelago is the moment most partners realise this is an island. Your Baecation host meets you at Manda airstrip and walks you to a private boat. Bags go on ahead by donkey. When you open the door of your room at the guesthouse, it has already been decorated.
Evening: Let it settle. Walk the Lamu Town waterfront as the dhows come in and eat in the lanes. They will still be asking questions. Answer some of them.

Day 2 — Working out where they are
Morning: The Old Town on foot. Breakfast at the guesthouse, then out with a local guide. Lamu Fort, the Lamu Museum, the Swahili House Museum, the carved doors, the donkey sanctuary, the market as the boats come in. This is the morning the place stops being a surprise and starts being somewhere they are glad to be.
Afternoon: Shela. A short boat south to twelve kilometres of open sand that is usually close to empty. Swim, walk, do nothing, stay as long as you like.
Evening: The dhow. A private two hour sunset sail with your own crew, sail up and engine off, the sun dropping behind the Old Town skyline with the minarets in silhouette.

Day 3 — One more they did not expect
Morning: Slowly, for once. Coffee on the roof and no obligations. If you want something to do, walk the seafront from Lamu Town towards Shela along the water, which takes around forty minutes and passes most of what is worth seeing.
Afternoon: Whatever you feel like. Lunch on the waterfront, then the roof, the beach or the lanes. This is the day where the trip stops feeling like an event and starts feeling like a holiday.
Evening: The last one. Your table is set for two on the rooftop terrace, arranged before you ever left Nairobi. The channel is below you, the town is going quiet, and nobody has to organise a thing.

Day 4 — Back to normal life
Morning: One more on the roof. Breakfast on the terrace, then a walk through the market for cardamom, halwa, a kikoi or a carved piece to take home.
Afternoon: Home. A private boat to Manda, your host sees you through the airstrip, and you fly to Nairobi. Transfer to your Nairobi address is included.

What To Carry
Their national ID or passport. This is the single most common way a surprise trip falls apart. It is required for the domestic flight, so take it from their wallet the night before and put it straight into your own bag
Loose cotton clothing for both of you covering shoulders and knees for town. Lamu is a conservative Muslim community and modest dress is good manners
Swimwear for both of you, which is the item people forget when packing for someone else
Any medication they take, and check quantities rather than guessing
Their toiletries and skincare in the brands they actually use, packed the morning of departure so nothing goes missing from the bathroom too early
Two kikois, which work as beach wraps, shoulder covers and towels
Sandals or flip flops for both
One slightly smarter change of clothes each for the rooftop dinner
