Flying to Ukunda Airstrip takes about an hour from Nairobi and is the quickest route. The alternative is the SGR to Mombasa followed by a road transfer of under an hour south across the Likoni channel, which many Kenyan couples prefer and which costs considerably less. Driving the whole way from Nairobi is a long day and we rarely recommend it unless you are combining the coast with Tsavo.

Yes, seaweed collects on some beaches during the Kusi months from June to October, with August and September usually the worst. It is seasonal, harmless and beach-specific: the exposed north-facing stretches get most of it, while the sheltered bays and reef-protected lagoons stay much cleaner. From December to March the water is at its clearest and seaweed is rarely an issue. If you are travelling in the Kusi window, tell us and we will put you on the right side of the bay.

The Diani-Chale Marine National Reserve is charged at the KWS marine rate, which is substantially lower than the safari parks, and is paid per person for each entry rather than as a daily park ticket. There is no single gate, so the fee applies whenever you go out on a boat, snorkel or dive inside the reserve boundaries. Payment runs through the KWS eCitizen system, not cash on the beach. Rates were revised in the October 2025 KWS review, so we confirm the current figure when we quote you.

Late November to March is the best window for water clarity, calm seas and snorkelling, with December to February the strongest and the most expensive. June to October brings wind, cooler temperatures, seaweed on exposed beaches and much lower rates, along with humpback whale season and the best kitesurfing conditions. April and May are the wettest months and some places close entirely.

Shimba Hills National Reserve, home to forest, waterfalls and one of Kenya’s last sable antelope populations, is about forty-five minutes inland and the best half day on this coast. Kaya Kinondo, a sacred Mijikenda forest near Diani, can be visited on a short guided walk, and Chale Island is worth a half day whenever the tide allows a crossing. Diani itself, a short drive north, has the restaurants, dive schools and nightlife if you want a livelier evening.

Kwale’s beaches are an established part of Kenya’s south coast tourism circuit and receive visitors year round, and normal precautions apply here as anywhere. Some governments maintain travel advisories covering parts of Kenya’s coast, and the boundaries of those advisories change, so check your own government’s current guidance for the specific area before you travel rather than relying on any operator’s summary.
