A Typical Night Game Drive, Hour by Hour
Every outing follows roughly the same rhythm, though your exact pickup time will depend on where in Nairobi you are staying.
Your Baecation driver collects you from your hotel or residence and gets you to the park’s main gate by around 5:00 to 5:30 pm, before the light fully fades. You will get a short briefing from your guide and the accompanying ranger covering safety expectations and what to look out for. Entry into the park happens as dusk sets in, so your first thirty minutes or so are golden-hour viewing before the drive turns fully nocturnal.
From roughly 6:00 to 9:00 pm, you are in active game drive mode, spotlights scanning for movement, your guide reading tracks and sounds you would never catch on your own. Around 9:00 pm, your guide begins the final sweep back toward the gate, and you are out of the park and on your way back to your accommodation by 10:00 pm at the latest, since KWS does not permit vehicles inside after that point.

This is where the experience differs most from a normal safari, and it is worth reading closely before you book.
- Book at least two days ahead. Every night game drive has to be cleared with KWS in advance, which means we cannot take same-day or next-day bookings. Build this into your Nairobi itinerary early.
- You must be at the gate on time. KWS enforces a firm entry window in the early evening. If you are not there by the agreed time, the drive cannot happen that night, there is no arriving at 10 pm and starting late.
- No convoys. KWS keeps the number of vehicles running night drives on any given night deliberately low. You are not sharing the park with a queue of other tour vehicles.
- Adults only, and sober. This is an 18-plus experience, and KWS does not permit guests who are visibly under the influence of alcohol to enter for a night drive. It is a safety rule, not a house rule, so plan your evening accordingly if you are coming from dinner or drinks beforehand.
- Stay in the vehicle. As with any Nairobi National Park game drive, you remain inside the vehicle at all times except at designated stops.
- Go easy on the flash. Flash photography can be restricted or discouraged at close range, since it disorients nocturnal animals’ eyes. Bring a camera with a good low-light setting instead.

- Booking last minute. This is the most common one. If a night game drive is the centrepiece of your Nairobi stopover, lock it in the moment your travel dates are confirmed, not the day before you land.
- Assuming any safari operator can run it. It requires specific KWS authorisation. Not every company advertising “night safaris” in Nairobi actually has it, ask directly before you book with anyone.
- Dressing for a daytime safari. Shorts and a t-shirt work fine at 2 pm in the park. At 8 pm in an open-roof vehicle, they do not.
- Bringing alcohol or arriving from a boozy dinner. This can get you turned away at the gate. Save the celebratory drinks for afterward.
