Should you stay inside the park or in Nakuru town?
This is the question that separates a good Nakuru trip from an average one, and the answer is not subtle.
Staying inside the gate buys you two hours that nobody else gets. Game drives begin from the lodge car park, so you can be out at first light while day visitors are still on the highway. Equally, you can stay out until the light goes rather than racing the six o’clock gate closing.
Those two hours, just after sunrise and just before sunset, are when predators move and when the light is worth a camera. Everything in between is quieter.
Staying in town is cheaper. However, you lose both windows, you queue at the gate each morning, and you spend part of every day commuting. All seven packages on this page stay inside, at Lake Nakuru Lodge, because that is the version worth paying for.
How far is Lake Nakuru from Nairobi?
About 160 kilometres, which takes roughly three hours by road in normal traffic.
The route runs northwest out of the city and climbs onto the Rift Valley escarpment. There is a viewpoint near the top where the entire valley floor drops away below you, with the Longonot and Suswa volcanoes out on the plain. Your driver guide will stop there for as long as you want.
We pick you up from your Nairobi home or hotel, usually at 7:00 am, and drop you back at the same address on the final afternoon.
When is the best time to visit Lake Nakuru as a couple?
The park is open and rewarding all year, so this is more a budget question than a wildlife one.
June through October is the dry season. Roads are firm, game viewing is at its most consistent, and the light is excellent. Naturally this is also peak season, so lodge rates rise.
November through May is greener and cheaper. Rain tends to fall in short afternoon bursts rather than all day, and the park looks considerably better for photographs. Our low season prices apply here, which is why most Kenyan couples travel during these months.
Weekdays are quieter than weekends at the viewpoints. If your plan involves a proposal, that matters more than the season does.
Lake Nakuru park entry fees in 2026
Lake Nakuru is classified by KWS as a Premium Park, alongside Amboseli. Fees are charged per visitor per 24 hour period, not once per trip, so a two night stay inside the park means two days of entry each.

One warning worth taking seriously. KWS now requires original identity documents at the gate. Photocopies and photos on your phone are refused. Anyone who cannot produce an original is charged the full non resident rate regardless of what their receipt says, so carry the actual document.

What is included, and what is not
Included in every package: return road transport from Nairobi in a private tour van, your driver guide including his meals and accommodation, all fuel, accommodation inside the park, full board meals, park entry for both of you, vehicle park fees, all game drives, and bottled water in the vehicle.
Not included: drinks at the lodge, laundry and spa charges, tips, travel insurance, and any add on you have not selected.
We list exclusions plainly because a surprise on a final invoice does more damage to a romantic trip than the amount involved ever justifies.
Why Lake Nakuru works so well for couples
Most Kenyan couples planning a first safari together start with the Masai Mara. Then they see the cost of three nights plus a flight, and the whole idea quietly moves to next year.
Lake Nakuru solves that problem without pretending to be something smaller. It is a full national park, gazetted as Kenya’s first rhino sanctuary, and it is fenced. Because of that fence, the animals stay put, so a two night trip here delivers what a five night trip elsewhere might not.
The park is also compact. You can cover it properly across two days rather than skimming it, which leaves actual time for the two of you.
Then there is the drive. At roughly 160 kilometres from Nairobi, you leave after breakfast and you are having lunch inside the gate. No flight, no transfer, no losing a day of a short trip to getting somewhere.
Are there still flamingos at Lake Nakuru?
Honestly, not in the numbers the photographs promise. So we do not sell them.
Lake Nakuru rose dramatically over the past decade, nearly doubling in surface area. As the water rose it also grew fresher, and the algae that lesser flamingos feed on collapsed with it. Consequently the birds moved on.
A coordinated count run by Nature Kenya with KWS and the National Museums of Kenya in July 2026 found the big flocks concentrated at Lake Logipi in the Suguta Valley instead. At Nakuru, Elmenteita and Bogoria, the water is now too fresh to support enough food.
You may still see flamingos. Plenty of couples do. Nevertheless, we will never put them in an itinerary, because we are not willing to sell you a picture from 2010.

What animals will you actually see at Lake Nakuru?
Rhino, first and foremost. Both black and white rhino live here, and the fenced sanctuary makes sightings more reliable than almost anywhere else in Kenya. Many couples see them on their very first drive.
Rothschild’s giraffe come second, and they deserve more attention than they get. Only a few thousand remain in the wild. Most visitors photograph them without realising what they are looking at.
Beyond those two, the park holds lion, leopard and buffalo. Add the rhino and that gives you four of the big five. There are no elephants at Nakuru, and we would rather tell you that here than have you spend three days waiting for one.
Birders do particularly well. Over 450 species have been recorded, and the drowned acacia woodland standing in the shallows has become a favourite perch for fish eagles and great white pelicans.

Those are low season prices, quoted as a starting figure. High season, roughly July through October and over the festive period, carries a supplement because lodge rates rise. We confirm the exact figure when you tell us your dates.
Every price above already includes the park entry fees for both of you. Many operators leave those off and let you discover them at the gate, which we think is a poor way to start a holiday.

Can you do Lake Nakuru as a day trip instead?
You can, and it costs considerably less. Still, you will spend six hours driving to get roughly four hours in the park, and you will miss both good light windows. Do we need a four wheel drive vehicle?
No. The main circuits are perfectly manageable in the Toyota Hiace tour van, which has a viewing roof that opens for game drives. That said, some eastern loops flood after heavy rain, which is when the Land Cruiser upgrade earns its money.
Is Lake Nakuru safe for couples?
Yes. The park is fenced and patrolled, you stay inside a lodge with staff on site, and you are with a professional driver guide throughout. Ordinary safari rules apply, chiefly staying in the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise.
Can we combine Lake Nakuru with Naivasha or Elementaita?
Certainly. All three sit along the same Rift Valley corridor, so an extra night is easy to add. Tell us at enquiry and we will price it.
How far in advance should we book?
Two to three weeks is comfortable in low season. For July through October, or for anything involving a cake, a photographer or a proposal setup, give us at least a month.
