Malindi sits on Kenya’s north coast in Kilifi County, about 120 kilometres up the road from Mombasa and roughly 20 kilometres north of Watamu. It is a working town rather than a resort strip, which is the whole point of it.
There is a fishing jetty, a museum, a long Italian community that has been there since the 1960s, a marine park that was Kenya’s first, and a 15th-century pillar raised by Vasco da Gama still standing on the point.

For a couple, that mix matters. You get a beach and a reef, but you also get somewhere with a town attached, where dinner is a decision rather than a buffet, and where a 20-minute drive inland puts you in a forest full of Swahili ruins. It is more interesting than a resort and considerably cheaper than one.
This guide covers what there actually is to do in Malindi as a couple, on the water and inland, and then walks through the seven Bae Experience packages we have built around it. We call them Malindi romantic getaways, and each one is shaped for a different reason for going.
Getting to Malindi
Malindi has its own airport, which changes the arithmetic completely. A flight from Nairobi’s JKIA takes a little over an hour, and the airport sits about ten minutes from most of the beach hotels. That is what makes a 3 day trip work.
The alternative is the SGR to Mombasa and a road transfer north of roughly two hours. It costs less and plenty of Kenyan couples prefer it, but on a short trip the timings turn arrival day into a full travel day. We quote it on request rather than building packages around it.
Driving the whole way from Nairobi is a long day and we rarely recommend it unless you are combining the coast with Tsavo.
Every package below includes return flights and both airport transfers as standard, so this part is handled either way.
On the Water
Malindi Marine National Park was gazetted in 1968, making it the first marine protected area in Kenya, and the wider area became a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1979. There is no single gate. You pay per person each time you go out, and fees run through the KWS system rather than in cash on the beach.

One thing nobody tells you before your first trip here: the tide runs your day, not the clock. At low water the sea pulls back to expose sandbanks and reef flats you can walk out to. At high water you swim off the beach. Boat trips are scheduled around the tide table, so ask your hotel for the week’s tides on the morning you arrive and plan around them.
Inland
A short drive from Malindi opens up something completely different from the beach, and this is where Malindi pulls ahead of most coastal towns in Kenya.
- Gede Ruins, the remains of a Swahili town abandoned centuries ago and now standing inside coastal forest, about twenty minutes from Malindi and the best half day on this coast
- Kipepeo Butterfly Project, a working butterfly farm beside the Gede gate, an easy and genuinely charming hour
- Arabuko Sokoke Forest, the largest remaining coastal forest in East Africa, home to birds found nowhere else and worth a guided walk if either of you likes that sort of thing
- Marafa Hell’s Kitchen, a sandstone gorge about an hour inland, cut by rain into ridges and columns that turn red and orange as the sun drops. Local tradition says a wealthy family who washed in milk were swallowed by the ground where they stood
- Mambrui, an older village than Malindi itself, with a pillar tomb set with Chinese porcelain and sand dunes running down to the water. It is also where the quad bikes run
- Malindi town, for the museum, the Portuguese chapel and Vasco da Gama’s pillar, all within a short walk of each other
Marafa is the one to prioritise if you only have a single free day. Go in the afternoon and stay until the light goes, because the last half hour is the whole reason to make the drive.
Where to Eat
The Italian restaurants are Malindi’s calling card and have been for sixty years. Baby Marrow on Silversands Road is the one locals name first, and it is walkable from several of the beach hotels. For the coast on a plate rather than Italy, the Swahili kitchens along the Malindi Garsen road serve fish in coconut sauce, biryani and samosas for a fraction of the price.
Timing is worth thinking about. Beachfront places live and die by the tide, and a table that looks out over water at seven can look out over sand flats at nine. If you have booked somewhere for the view, ask what the tide is doing that evening.
Making It Feel Like an Occasion
The activities above fill the days. What makes a trip feel like an occasion is usually smaller and more deliberate: a table set for two away from the restaurant, a chilled bottle waiting in the room when you check in, a massage on the last morning, or a photographer who is somewhere you will not notice until it is over.

A wedding asks a great deal of two people, and the last thing either of you wants afterwards is another long journey. Zanzibar or the Seychelles can eat a full day of travel each way. A proposal has exactly one hard requirement, which is that it stays a surprise. This package is arranged through a single consultant on a number you nominate, with the property briefed before you land rather than on the day. When to Go
This coast runs on two monsoons rather than on wet and dry seasons, and they produce two genuinely different holidays.
Kaskazi, from late November to March, brings flat glassy mornings and the clearest water of the year. This is the snorkelling and diving window, and it is also peak season, so Christmas and New Year book out months ahead at the highest rates.
Kusi, from June to October, is cooler, breezier and considerably cheaper. The southeast wind stirs the water and seaweed collects on the exposed north facing beaches, worst in August and September. In exchange you get humpback whale season, excellent kitesurfing and the beaches largely to yourselves.
April and May are the wettest months and some places close entirely.

How much does a romantic getaway to Malindi cost?

Which Malindi package should we choose?
If there is no particular reason for the trip, take the Getaway. If you want the coast and an inland day without an occasion attached, take the Vacation, which gives you the extra night to fit both. The occasion packages exist because a honeymoon, a proposal and a surprise each need something different handled for you, and that is what separates them rather than the price.
Is three days long enough for Malindi?
It works, because the flight is short. You land before lunch on the first day and keep most of the last morning, which gives you a genuine free day in the middle. If you want both a beach day and an inland day without rushing either, the four day version is the one to book.
Can we upgrade the hotel?

Do we have to fly, or can we take the SGR?
You can take the SGR to Mombasa and transfer north by road, and we will quote it. Be aware that on a three day trip the departure timings turn your arrival day into a travel day, which is why we build the packages around flights and keep rail as an option rather than a default.
Can activities be added to any package?
Yes. Marine park boat trips, snorkelling, diving, kayaking, fishing, the sunset dhow, quad biking at Mambrui, Gede Ruins and the Marafa excursion can all be added to any of the seven. They are not tied to one occasion.
