Rapids Camp keeps its rooms separate from the camping ground, with electricity and private bathrooms. The camp also hosts corporate retreats and team building groups, so we book the units furthest from that side of the site.

What is not included, and why

Transport. 

Sagana is close enough to reach on your own, so we do not bury a vehicle cost in the headline price. Buses like Mololine run from Nairobi regularly and the river is about 2 km from Sagana town. 

Self drive hire starts around KES 3,500 a day. If you would rather not drive, a chauffeured return transfer is available as an add on.

The adrenaline items. 

Full white water rafting at KES 9,000 per person, bungee jumping at KES 10,500, zip lining at KES 5,000 and archery at KES 4,500. Pricing these separately means that if one of you wants the bungee and the other does not, only one of you pays for it.

Romantic touches. 

Flowers and candles in the room on arrival, a cake, a photographer, a private sundowner on the riverbank or a candlelit table away from the main dining area. All arranged before you travel rather than requested at reception.

Getting to Sagana

The road is the only real option and it is a good one. Roughly 100 km from Nairobi along the Nairobi Nyeri road, about two hours in normal traffic. Buses run regularly and taxis or boda bodas cover the last stretch from town to the river.

There is no airport at Sagana and no passenger rail stop, so ignore anything that suggests otherwise. If you are flying into Kenya, you land at Jomo Kenyatta International and drive from there.

When to go

July to October and January to February bring dry days, clear trails and the most reliable rafting conditions. July to October is the busiest window, so book early.

November to December has lighter showers and is still very much raftable, often with better rates and fewer people.

March to May is the heavy rain season, when trails get slippery. We will tell you honestly if your dates fall in a difficult window rather than take the booking regardless.

A note on who this suits

The Weekend Getaway package at KES 16,500 per person sharing, which works out at KES 33,000 for two people across three days and two nights. That includes a furnished tent, all meals and seven river activities, with the full white-water rafting run among them. Booking the same components separately costs more, because the camp prices a bundled stay well below the sum of its individual activities.

2. Do we have to raft?

No. Four of the seven packages include no rafting at all, and the two walks, the kayaking and the plunge are all gentle. Rafting is priced separately at KES 9,000 per person precisely so that a couple who does not want it is not paying for it. If one of you wants the rapids and the other does not, only one of you books.

3. What is the difference between the tent and the room?

The tent is furnished with a proper bed and bedding, set among the trees near the river, and shares washing facilities. The room is a separate unit with electricity and its own bathroom, away from the camping ground.

Everything else- meals, activities, guides- is identical. The room costs roughly KES 11,500 more per person for the same three days.

4. Can we book a Sagana getaway on short notice?

Usually yes, and this is one of the practical advantages of a destination two hours from Nairobi. There are no flights to lock in and no long lead times. The exception is July to October, which is the busy window, and any activity with limited daily slots such as bungee jumping. Tell us at booking rather than on the morning.

5. Is Sagana safe for couples who have never done adventure activities?

The Sagana run has been operating commercially for over 30 years with licensed guides, safety kayakers and mandatory helmets and flotation devices. Rapids are graded, so first-timers run gentler Class 2 and 3 water rather than being dropped into Class 4. Every included activity in our packages comes with a guide and full safety kit.

6. What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not stop rafting or the river activities, and November to December is genuinely raftable. Heavy rain in the March to May season makes trails slippery and can affect river conditions. We check forecasts before your dates and will tell you honestly if the timing is poor rather than take the booking and let you find out.

7. Is there network coverage and Wi-Fi at the camps?

Safaricom coverage is reliable in Sagana town and generally workable at the riverside camps, and the camps offer Wi-Fi. Whether you use it is another matter. Most couples who book this trip are trying to be unreachable for two days, and the river is loud enough to make phone calls awkward anyway.

8. Can we drink alcohol at the camp?

Yes, the camps have bars and drinks are charged separately from the package. A wine or champagne arrival can be arranged as an add-on. Worth knowing that operators do not allow anyone to raft, bungee or zip line after drinking, so the order of your day matters.

9. What should we not bother packing?

Heels, anything white and anything you would be upset to see soaked. The single item people forget is a full change of dry clothes for after the water, and the single item that saves the trip is a waterproof phone pouch. Sagana gets genuinely cold at first light, so one warm layer each earns its space.
