Why Lake Elementaita Works So Well for Couples
Elementaita is the quiet lake of the Rift Valley. Naivasha has the boats and the crowds. Nakuru has the game drives. Elementaita has space, silence and a long view.
The lake is part of the Kenya Lake System UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 2011, and a protected Ramsar wetland since 2005. It is the only place in Kenya where great white pelicans breed. The long ridge of the Sleeping Warrior hill shapes the skyline above it.
Around the lake there is more than water. Soysambu Conservancy covers 48,000 acres along the western shore, with Rothschild’s giraffes among its residents. At the Kariandusi Prehistoric Site, early humans made hand axes between 700,000 and one million years ago. Both are easy additions if you have the car.

All seven packages are based at Lake Elementaita Lodge or similar, on the escarpment above the lake and about 500 metres off the highway. The lodge grew around a farmhouse that Galbraith Cole established about a century ago. It has 33 rooms, a pool, and gardens that look out over the water.
Rooms are standard doubles or twins, simple and comfortable rather than showy. That keeps the price where it is.

How to Get to Lake Elementaita From Nairobi
The drive takes about 2 to 2.5 hours on the A104. Elementaita lies about 40 kilometres past Naivasha and 45 kilometres before Nakuru town. The lodge sits just off the highway, so no rough roads are involved.
Transport is an add on rather than part of the package price. That way, couples who drive themselves are not paying for a car they do not need. If you would rather be driven, your driver stays with you for the whole trip.

Driving yourselves? Leave Nairobi in the morning. The highway carries heavy truck traffic, so avoid driving it after dark.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Lake Elementaita?
The lake is open all year. The dry months, roughly June to early October and January to February, bring clear skies and easy walking. July to September is the busiest stretch, so book early.
The long rains fall from March to May, and the short rains in November and December. Showers rarely last all day. In return you get green hills, good birdlife and quieter lodges.
Prices on this page are low season rates. Weekends and public holidays can cost more, and stays between 20 December and 4 January carry a festive supplement.
Will You See Flamingos at Lake Elementaita?
Sometimes, but we never promise them. Greater and lesser flamingos feed at Elementaita, but their numbers rise and fall with water levels and food. Some months the shallows are busy. Other months the birds move to Nakuru or Bogoria.
Great white pelicans are the more reliable sight. Your guided walk is timed for the early hours, when the birds are most active.
