For a long time, the honest answer about Mombasa was that it cost you either a flight or a day of your life.
That is no longer true, and most Kenyan couples have not caught up with it. The Madaraka Express leaves Nairobi Terminus at eight in the morning and puts you on the coast in the early afternoon. First Class costs KES 4,500 each way. Nobody drives, nobody fights Mombasa Road at four in the morning, and nobody arrives too tired to enjoy the first day.
Affordable Romantic Getaways in Mombasa.
This guide covers what an affordable romantic getaway in Mombasa actually costs in 2026, what is included, what is not, and the practical things that catch couples out. All 7 of our Mombasa packages include real prices, not a form to fill in.
Why the Train Changed Mombasa for Couples.
Driving to the coast takes 8 to 11 hours depending on lorries and roadworks, and whoever drives arrives wrecked. Flying is quick but costs more than the accommodation on a short trip, and Moi International still needs a transfer at the other end.
The train sits between the two and does something neither manages. It gives you 6 hours with nothing to do.
The line crosses Tsavo mid-morning, and game stands close enough to the track to point at. Couples who board expecting to endure the journey tend to describe it afterwards as one of the better parts of the trip. You talk, you read, you look out of the window, and neither of you is responsible for anything.
What the SGR Actually Costs and When It Runs

Three departures run daily in each direction between Nairobi Terminus at Syokimau and Mombasa Terminus at Miritini.
The eight o’clock Inter-County calls at all stations and reaches the coast around ten past two. The three o’clock Express stops only at Voi and gets in after eight in the evening. The ten o’clock night train arrives just before four in the morning.
Current one-way fares, published on the Kenya Railways fare sheet, are KES 1,500 Economy, KES 4,500 First Class and KES 12,000 Premium. Premium is the only class with a discounted return fare at KES 20,000, so if you are upgrading, book it as a return rather than two singles.
Our packages use First Class both ways, out on the morning Inter-County and home on the afternoon Express. That combination gives you a full arrival afternoon and a full final day, which the alternatives do not.
One thing to know before you book anything. Kenya Railways tickets are tied to a named passenger and are not transferable. Both of you must carry the original identification document used at booking, not a copy and not a photo on a phone, or you will not board. Cancellations must be made in person at a station at least 48 hours before departure and carry a 30 per cent penalty. Within 48 hours, you lose the fare. Rescheduling costs 10 per cent, is allowed once, and a rescheduled ticket can no longer be refunded.
This matters most if you are planning a surprise. You need their ID details before we can ticket, and the ID itself has to be in their bag on the morning.
Where You Stay: the Case for Nyali
Mombasa’s North Coast runs from Nyali through Bamburi to Shanzu, and the further north you go the longer the transfer from the terminus.
We anchor on Nyali. Our partner hotel there has 152 rooms and every single one opens onto a private balcony facing the Indian Ocean, which removes the one thing most likely to sour a short stay. It sits directly on white sand with a bistro built into the coral rock at the water’s edge, roughly 7 km from the Mombasa CBD and 1.6 km from City Mall and Nyali Centre. Mombasa Marine National Park lies directly offshore, so snorkelling is a short boat ride from the beach rather than a half day expedition.
It is also the closest of the North Coast properties to Miritini, which shortens the transfer at both ends of the trip.
Every package is on half board, which means breakfast and dinner are covered and lunch stays open. That is deliberate. A long morning on the beach should not have to end because a buffet is closing.
The Transfer Nobody Else Tells You About
The arrivals area at Miritini is chaotic. Touts, unmetered taxis and a lot of confident people telling tired travellers what a fair price looks like.
Your driver meets you on the platform, not somewhere in the car park. It is a small thing that costs us more to run, and it is the single piece of feedback we get most often.
The Seven Mombasa Packages
Each one is built on the same spine of train, transfer, Nyali beach hotel on half board and a car on the final day. What changes is the shape of the trip and what we arrange around it.
Honeymoon, four days three nights, from KES 52,900 per person. The only package with a third night, because a honeymoon should not feel like a long weekend. Two full unscheduled days rather than one.
Anniversary, three days two nights, from KES 42,900 per person. Short enough to take without negotiating leave, which is why anniversaries so often get marked with a dinner instead of a trip.
Birthday, three days 2 nights, from KES 42,900 per person. Three days instead of three hours in a restaurant with a badly split bill. The birthday itself has nothing scheduled in it.
Proposal: 3 days 2 nights, from KES 42,900 per person. Built for the person doing the asking. A planning call before you travel agrees the evening, the timing and who is and is not present, and a private setup goes up on the sand while you are elsewhere.
Surprise, 3 days 2 nights, from KES 42,900 per person. Confirmations go only to the contact you nominate and we never call the other person. The ID rule above is the one thing we cannot hide for you.
Getaway, 3 days 2 nights, from KES 42,900 per person. No occasion, no reason. The trips with nothing to celebrate are the ones that get postponed forever, so this one is built to be easy to say yes to.
Vacation, 3 days 2 nights, from KES 42,900 per person. The one people extend. An extra night is KES 20,000 per couple, because the train and transfers are already paid for.
What Is Included:
Return First Class rail, the private arrival transfer with a platform meet, accommodation on half board, and a private saloon car with driver on your final day from checkout until the station drop, with fuel, driver’s allowance and parking covered.
That final day matters more than it sounds. Check-out is at ten and the train leaves at three. On most coast trips, that is five hours sitting in a lobby with your bags. Instead, the car is yours, luggage in the boot, for Old Town and Fort Jesus, or Haller Park and the giraffe feeding platform, or a long lunch on the creek and nothing else.
What Is Not
Lunch on all days, drinks beyond the meal plan, travel insurance and personal expenses.
Gate fees are paid on the day. Fort Jesus is KES 550 per adult citizen following the National Museums of Kenya fee revision that took effect in May 2026, and Haller Park is KES 1,000. A couple doing both pays KES 3,100.
Travel between 23 December and 2 January carries a festive supplement at every hotel on this coast and is quoted separately.
Add Ons Worth Taking
Marine Park snorkelling for two is KES 9,000 and the glass bottom boat is KES 10,000, both leaving from the beach in front of the hotel.
The Tamarind dhow dinner cruise is KES 18,000 for two. You board at half past six with a Dawa cocktail, sail Tudor Creek past Fort Jesus lit against the water, eat seafood cooked on the deck in front of you and come back in by half past ten. It does not sail on Sundays.
A photographer, a spa treatment for two or a private beach setup are KES 10,000 each. A transfer home from Nairobi Terminus is KES 5,000, which most couples take once they realise the train lands after eight in the evening.
Best Time to Visit Mombasa
The coast works year-round, and the differences are smaller than people expect.
June to October is dry and cooler, the easiest weather and the busiest hotels, so book early. January and February are hot, clear and noticeably quieter. The long rains in April and May bring the lowest rates of the year and a genuinely green coastline, and the rain here tends to arrive hard and briefly rather than settling in for the day. November and December bring short rains and then the festive rush.
If you want the cheapest romantic weekend in Mombasa, go in May. If you want guaranteed sun, go in August and book two months out.

Yes, the original document used at booking. Tickets are tied to a named passenger and are not transferable. A photocopy or a photo on your phone will not be accepted.
Where is the Mombasa train station?
Mombasa Terminus is at Miritini, roughly 22 km from the Nyali beach hotels. Every one of our packages includes a private transfer with a meet on the platform.
