Amboseli National Park sits in Kajiado County in southern Kenya, on the border with Tanzania. It is best known for its big, relaxed elephant herds, which researchers have followed since 1972 in the longest running study of wild elephants anywhere.

On clear mornings and evenings, Mount Kilimanjaro rises behind the plains from across the border in Tanzania. Cloud often hides the mountain through the middle of the day, so the early drives are the ones to plan around. Lion, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo and a long list of swamp birds share the park with the elephants. Rhino are not found here, so Amboseli is not a Big Five destination.

About The Amboseli National Park

Kenya's Wildlife Conservatory Safari Destination

Amboseli became a national park in 1974 and covers 392 square kilometres at the core of a far larger ecosystem of about 8,000 square kilometres that spreads across the Kenya and Tanzania border. Much of that wider land is Maasai community land, including group ranches and conservancies, which is why elephants and other wildlife move freely in and out of the park.

The landscape is a study in contrasts: a dry lake bed that shimmers with heat haze, open grassland, acacia woodland and green swamps fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro. The park protects two of the ecosystem’s five main swamps, and they are the reason Amboseli holds so much wildlife through the dry months.

The Amboseli Trust for Elephants recorded 1,878 known elephants in the population at the end of 2023, drawn from families it has identified and followed for more than five decades. Because Amboseli escaped the worst of the poaching of the 1980s and 1990s, the population still includes mature bulls carrying heavy tusks, and the herds are unusually calm around vehicles.

Amboseli National Park lies in Kajiado County, close to the Tanzanian border and about 230 to 240 kilometres from Nairobi by road, depending on the route and the gate you use.

Getting There by Road:

Most road trips from Nairobi follow Mombasa Road to Emali, then turn south on the tarmac road to Kimana. From Kimana a short murram stretch leads to Kimana Gate, and several camps on the eastern side of the park, including Kibo Safari Camp and Sentrim Amboseli, sit within a few kilometres of that gate. Allow about four to five hours from Nairobi, depending on traffic leaving the city.

The second route runs south through Kajiado to Namanga on the Tanzanian border, then along a gravel road to Meshanani Gate. The road to Namanga is tarmac, but the final stretch to the gate is slow and can be difficult after rain.

Getting There by Air:

Safarilink and Airkenya run scheduled flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Amboseli Airstrip, with a flying time of under an hour. Light aircraft need soft bags with a strict weight limit. Your lodge or a Baecation transfer meets you at the airstrip, and charter flights can also be arranged.

What's the cost of Amboseli National Park Safaris?

Amboseli National Park Entry Fee

Under the tariff that took effect on 1 October 2025, Amboseli is a premium park. Adult entry is KES 1,500 for East African citizens, KES 2,025 for Kenya residents, USD 50 for other African citizens and USD 90 for non residents, each valid for 24 hours. Children pay reduced rates.

Fees are paid in advance through the eCitizen platform by M-Pesa or card, and ID or a passport is checked at the gate. Management of the park is being transferred from KWS to the Kajiado County Government and the transfer is before the courts, so fees could change. We confirm the current rate for your dates when we quote.

Where you stay sets most of the cost. Camps just outside Kimana Gate give the best value, lodges inside the park cost more, and the private conservancies around the park sit at the top of the range, usually with a nightly conservancy fee on top. Getting Around

A private tour van with a pop-up roof and a driver-guide is the usual way to explore Amboseli by road. A Land Cruiser costs more and handles dust and soft ground more comfortably.

Best Wildlife Viewing: Dry conditions from June to October, and again in January and February, pull wildlife towards the swamps and make sightings easier.

Busier Months: June to October is peak season, so camps fill early and the main routes are busier.

Green Season: The long rains usually fall from March to May and the short rains around November and December. The park stays open, the plains turn green and you share sightings with fewer vehicles.
