Staying in Narok town or another gateway property means adding a drive into the reserve before your day even begins, which eats into exactly the golden hour light that makes for the best photos and the most active wildlife.

The road is a well-used tourist route, and our drivers are professional driver-guides who do this run regularly, so safety on the road itself isn’t a real concern. The more honest question is comfort: 5 to 6 hours is a genuinely long transfer, from tarmac to Narok and then a rougher murram stretch into the reserve.

If you’d rather skip the road altogether, Safarilink, AirKenya, Fly540 and Jambo Jet all fly Wilson Airport to Mara airstrips in around 45 to 60 minutes, a genuinely good option for couples who’d rather spend those hours in the Mara than in a vehicle.

A lodge-only booking often leaves you to arrange game drives, a guide and sometimes even transfers separately once you’re on the ground, at whatever rate is available that day.

If your dates fall in high season, July through December, which includes the Great Migration, book as early as you can, ideally 2 to 3 months out. Lodges genuinely sell out inside the reserve during this window, and last-minute bookings tend to mean paying more for less choice.

Outside that window, January through June, you have considerably more flexibility, though we’d still recommend booking a few weeks ahead. Rather than arriving and hoping, since our packages include pre-arranged park entry and lodge availability that walk-in arrangements don’t guarantee.

High season adds roughly KES 6,000 per person for the increased park fee. The honest comparison point: a self-arranged trip at a similar lodge, booked without a package, commonly ends up costing more once you’ve separately paid for transfers, a guide, and game drives that would otherwise have been bundled in.
